World Cup rosters being announced

Some notable additions/omissions:

-Patrick Laine makes Team Finland, Puljujarvi does not
-No Jagr for the Czech Republic, as he declined the invite
-No Kovalchuk or Radulov for Russia, because Russia gonna Russia
-They did invite Slava Voynov though, so the NHL has a decision there to make on how to handle that

This is the schedule for when the full roster will be announced today:

The NHL is trying to establish the World Cup as a premier, best-on-best tournament. And they're announcing the rosters of the 3 teams that will likely be of most interest to fans after 5 pm on a long-weekend Friday. It's amazing this league hasn't been forced to fold yet.

How is Vasilevskiy eligible for Team Russia if he is under 24?

The U24 team is only for North Americans.

Anyone else kind of really want to see a U24 team from the whole world at this tournament though? Not sure who would staff it and it would severely dampen the effectiveness of some of the teams with smaller player pools, etc., but there are some very interesting names that would probably give make them the team to watch.

Thought this would be neat to see a line-up for, I might be missing someone but this is a rough guess:

Landeskog-McDavid-MacKinnon
Gaudreau-Kuznetsov-Kucherov
Forsberg-Barkov-Monahan
Saad-Couturier-Larkin

Rielly-Ekblad
Lindholm-Klingberg
GhostBear-Parayko
Maatta-Ristolainen

Mrazek
Gibson
Vasilevskiy/Murray

I just had to include another defence pairing because I couldn't leave those 2 off, but even then a guy like Seth Jones wouldn't make the cut. That 2012 class man.

That team would compete with Canada for sure.

Michalek is good enough for the Czech team but is a spare part for the 30th place NHL team.

Though, to be fair, with Jagr saying no and Elias retiring, they didn't have a lot of other options with more than a couples seasons in the NHL or this level of international experience. Basically, it was Michalek, Fleischmann, Tlusty, or Hudler - not exactly the most inspiring group.

Yeah, also, I don't necessarily get the sense that players are buying into this tournament so that might be making it hard to recruit.

Looks about right. Maybe Eichel in there somewhere over Couturier?

I was semi-hoping for a Laine - Matthews - Puljujarvi line. But maybe in a couple of years.

I would take Lindholm-Klingberg over Kronwall-Hjarlmarsson, but OEL-Karlsson/Hedman-Stralman is a hell of a top-4.

The first roster without a Leaf, and the first one where there's legitimately good players left off the roster for reasons other than "Russia being Russia."

Not super-impressed with their forwards. Yeah, it's a good group but they don't really have that one guy who scares you.

That's kind of the point I was trying to make, they don't have very many options these days. They aren't very deep any more.

Fair enough. I felt the same way. I looked at their roster and thought that coudl easily be a bottom 5 team in the NHL.

I've seen a lot of people who love that team, but with the Sedin's and Zetterberg all turning 36 years old soon and very clearly declining the forward group isn't what it once was.

Per the earlier observation re: Russia tabbing Slava Voynov for their backend --
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/russias-slava-voynov-may-banned-world-cup/

Just because Slava Voynov was named to Russia?s World Cup of Hockey roster Friday doesn?t necessarily mean he?ll be permitted to participate in the tournament.

[...]

Both the NHL and the Players? Association, which run World Cup jointly, are reviewing the matter.

"We will obviously have to review his status with the Players' Association prior to the start of the tournament in September," Bill Daly, the NHL's deputy commissioner, stated. "It is not my current expectation that this player will be deemed eligible to play in the World Cup of Hockey."
