It seems like its been that way for a very long time. I always thought there were very few quality Russian defensemen in the NHL, so I decided to take a look.
It seems There were only 8 who played more than 10 games in the entire league last year and only 20 that have played more than 50 games over the last 10 seasons and there aren't many players you would call stars among them.
Those are even lower numbers than I would have guessed.
