Nothing wrong with adding a veteran lefty to the pen at a reasonable price. Oliver may not be the most exciting or high profile addition, but he's a quality bullpen arm.

Yeah, there's nothing to argue with there in terms of his performance as a lefty specialist. His FIP's been under four every year since '07 and under three the last two years.

What is FIP?
Busta Reims said:Jays also signed Aaron Laffey today - another lefty, but, more of a swingman than a specialist. While his numbers haven't been great, he's still on the young side (he'll turn 27 shortly after the season starts) and, at one point, looked like he had decent potential as a starter (though, mid to back of the rotation type). He's a decent low-risk/high-reward type pick up, I guess.

Sarge said:Horray! Frasor's back (for Myles Jaye and Daniel Webb.) Always liked him... We might have a decent pen now.
Sarge said:The pen could go this way...
Closer; RHP Sergio Santos
Setup; RHP Jason Frasor
Setup; LHP Darren Oliver
Middle reliever; RHP Jesse Litsch
Middle reliever; RHP Casey Janssen
Middle reliever; LHP Luis Perez
Long reliever; RHP Carlos Villanueva
Like I said... Pretty good I think.
Edit:.. and it could get better should we get a starter bumping someone out of the rotation and into the pen.

I'd like them to not have Luis Perez there, but otherwise it isn't awful, but it also isn't a great pen either. He had a 1.55 WHIP, was a negative WAR player, and had a FIP of 4.64.
They still need to fix the offense though, or at least find a way to turf Teahen, he's a waste of a roster space.
Yes, the Blue Jays inquired about the availability of Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, but that isn?t really news. Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos routinely asks about the best players on every team. He almost always is told no.
