2011 Blue Jays/MLB Thread

Nothing wrong with adding a veteran lefty to the pen at a reasonable price. Oliver may not be the most exciting or high profile addition, but he's a quality bullpen arm.

Yeah, there's nothing to argue with there in terms of his performance as a lefty specialist. His FIP's been under four every year since '07 and under three the last two years.

What is FIP?

Pitching quality independent of fielding.  It essentially takes out all at-bats that end up as live-balls in play as that depends heavily on how good your defense is to make plays/miss plays.

It's a combination number of strike-outs, walks, hit-batsmen, and home-runs that gets applied to a constant to create a nice looking number specific to the AL/NL.

Jays also signed Aaron Laffey today - another lefty, but, more of a swingman than a specialist. While his numbers haven't been great, he's still on the young side (he'll turn 27 shortly after the season starts) and, at one point, looked like he had decent potential as a starter (though, mid to back of the rotation type). He's a decent low-risk/high-reward type pick up, I guess.

Davidi says he'll be given an opportunity to compete for a spot in the rotation.

Sort of in the same way that you or I would also be low risk/high reward signings, sure.

Horray! Frasor's back (for Myles Jaye and Daniel Webb.) Always liked him...  We might have a decent pen now.

Meh. Gave up next to nothing to pick him up (two low level pitching prospects). As long as he's not closing (which he won't be), he's generally been an effective bullpen arm, so, yay, I guess. I wonder what AA will trade him for this summer. ;)

The pen could go this way...

Closer; RHP Sergio Santos
Setup; RHP Jason Frasor
Setup; LHP Darren Oliver
Middle reliever; RHP Jesse Litsch
Middle reliever; RHP Casey Janssen
Middle reliever; LHP Luis Perez
Long reliever; RHP Carlos Villanueva

Like I said... Pretty good I think.

Edit:.. and it could get better should we get a starter bumping someone out of the rotation and into the pen.

I'd like them to not have Luis Perez there, but otherwise it isn't awful, but it also isn't a great pen either.  He had a 1.55 WHIP, was a negative WAR player, and had a FIP of 4.64.

They still need to fix the offense though, or at least find a way to turf Teahen, he's a waste of a roster space.

Maybe if/when we land a starter, it's Cecil (LHP) who gets reassigned to the pen, replacing Perez (LHP)? Who knows... It's also possible at least one of these relievers is part of a deal that ultimately lands us that starter so who knows at this point?

Frasor has been up and down the last few years so it's tough to look at this and say too much about it. He wasn't very good last year(1.38 WHIP) but he's a known quantity at least. I don't know that counting on him in a significant role is a idea.

Yes, the Blue Jays inquired about the availability of Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, but that isn?t really news. Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos routinely asks about the best players on every team. He almost always is told no.

You have to turn over many stones before you find something. I like his persistence.
