2011 Toronto Raptors/NBA/Labour Negotiations Spectacular

Andy Katz has confirmed the Raps are keeping Ross. Derozan on the other hand.

So as a long suffering Raps fan with very little college hoops experience, how should I feel right now?

From what I've read so far, Ross has a pretty well-rounded game and looks like he can contribute almost immediately but really lacks the upside that a lot of other guys available have in the draft.

Canadian Andrew Nicholson to Orlando at #19.

My draft hopes are now pinned on Jared Sullinger slipping to 37.

To be honest, there's not much "upside" with any of the guys in this draft. Basically everything behind Davis has huge question marks. MKG has huge questions about his scoring, Waiters wasn't a top 5 talent until like...a week ago. Robinson was a late entry, he's older than everybody else, and he's pretty much a defensive specialist.

Useful players, but aside from Davis...probably none that are "impact" players. Wasn't expecting Ross, but they say he's one of (if not the) best shooters in the draft. To go along with above average d and athleticism...I'm not so angry.

I guess I'm only disappointed because HF had me believing we'd get Lowry+ 14 for our pick.

Also...a writeup on the Ross pick from Fox Sports...

"8. Toronto: Terrence Ross, 6-6, SG, Washington

The Raptors look at this as their second lottery pick, with last year's pick Jonas Valanciunas set to join them. With him in the fold, Toronto felt like they could pass on the tumbling Andre Drummond and take one of the draft's most athletic wingmen in Ross. He was trapped on a dysfunctional Washington team last year, so many folks didn't get a chance to see just how good Ross really is. He has remarkably deep range on his jumper and he loves to get out and run on the break. Think of him as a high-character, smarter, defensive-minded, doesn't-fade-away-on-every-jumper-for-no-reason J.R. Smith. Strong pick. - Nick Prevenas"

I was hoping that Draymond Green would fall but Quincy Acy is the Raps 2nd rounder.

I actually like the Quincy Acy pick.  Second rounders are usually garbage.  Acey has the potential to be somewhat of a combo between JYD and Reggie Evans (well mostly he just looks like Reggie).  He was a defensive all-star, rebounds pretty well, has insanely long arms and has considerably better hands than Evans so there is maybe a little bit of hope that he can develop a bit more of an offensive game to become a decent high energy guy on the 2nd unit.

The Ross pick I'm definitely not in love with.  It did add to an area the Raptors sorely needed but I think they really could have used Rivers as a PG.  They don't have a reliable backup and even if they go out and manage to attract Nash.  In 2-3 years both Nash and Calderon are gone again and the Raptors don't have anything at that position.

I do like that both guys have a positive defensive reputation though.  That's pretty key coming off the brutal Raptors defense of the past few years.

Little behind the times LK, Raps were in the top 10 in a lot of defensive statistics.

It's offense where they were outmatched. Casey did a heck of a job with last year's Raptors team - considering the talent they had was pretty mediocre and only a few of them are defensively inclined.

Ya, having Bargs/Derozan playing as much as they did and still performing well defensively speaks volumes about Casey's abilities as a defensive coach.

I know, but I think he focused so much on the defensive side that we are going to see more offensive changes just by bringing things back into the mix over time.  That Casey managed to get a bunch of guys not known for their defense to (for the most part) buy into playing defense is great.  But I think it would be nice to have a few more guys who come into the system already viewed as guys who are decent defenders.

Meanwhile, ESPN reports Raptors have offered Steve Nash $36 million over three years.

I read it was two teams that offered Hibbert the max - which makes Indiana's life very interesting. They probably have to match it, but they are also interested in Eric Gordon (who is also looking for a max deal) so I doubt they can keep Hibbert and Granger while adding Gordon.

Portland's going crazy. Hibbert max. Gordon probably max. Raptors might be able to steal Batum who, with Nash, could take them to the playoffs pretty easily.

Ah yes and apparently Omer Asik, the 3 and 5 centre, has at least one offer and maybe two for $8m/year.

NBA free agency. It's gonna get wild.

Do the Raptors have enough cap space?  The Timberwolves threw a 4 year 50M offer sheet at him (Batum).
