Yes, yes I would be okay with that.

Well, alright, but in the abstract.

I mean, I was just hoping that with no players on the Bruins, the Leafs would actually win a game against them.  Of course I can also see the following transpiring as well:

Bowen:  And Kessel scores in to his own net AGAIN!!!  Holy Mackinaw!!!  That's three on the night for Kessel against his own team.  Have you ever seen anything like that Ralphie?
Ralph:  Actually Joe, I'm kinda going by Jim now.  Trying to be a little more professional.
Bowen:  Shut-up you little pissant, I will call you what I want to call you.  And there goes the Bruins crowd again.

"THANK YOU KESSEL" clap, clap, clap, clap, clap "THANK YOU KESSEL" clap, clap, clap, clap, clap "THANK YOU KESSEL" clap, clap, clap, clap, clap "THANK YOU KESSEL"

*shudders*

CBA meetings between NHL and NHLPA that are to take place at undisclosed location WILL involve a mediator. #TSN

Good. Hopefully the gap is narrow enough that it'll work. - I think it is.

I'm just going to assume nothing is going anywhere until I hear "we have a deal" from both sides.

*chugs beer* *waits*

*repeat*

I wonder what Bettman and Fehr are like drunk?

A couple more details from the NHLPA's most recent proposal before things blew up:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhlpa-backed-off-money-guarantees-suggested-nba-esque-174951437--nhl.html

? The NHL Players' Association backed off on its proposal that the players' share could not go backwards in terms of dollars starting in Year 2. It had been a non-starter for the NHL.

? The NHLPA suggested a mid-level cap exception. The NHL told the union it was a non-starter. It is unclear whether it is still on the table.

? The sides did not discuss how the payroll range -- the salary cap and floor -- would be calculated.
...
The League has embraced the idea of setting the cap and floor on a percentage basis, but not at 20 percent. It does not want to widen the payroll range out of fear of upsetting competitive balance.

They're back together today.

Word is that U.S. federal mediators have started meeting with the NHL and NHLPA. Location still undisclosed.

The elite, big-money players holding out for a deal involved today:

Bruce Garrioch ‏@SunGarrioch

Players at meeting: Adams, Aucoin, Boyes, Campoli, Darche, Doan, Hainsey, Mayers, A. McDonald, Montador, B. Morrison, D. Murray, Winnik.

For the sake of contrast:

DarrenDreger: CBA meeting begins this morning at 11am. No owners participating on NHL side. Bettman, Daly and lawyers.

DarrenDreger: Told by mediators advice there was no face to face between players and NHL today. No change from Thursday in either sides position.

This whole saga has become immensely boring.  It's rapidly approaching the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, or arguing over abortion, as examples of epochal ennui.

That escalated quickly.

Bettman and Fehr need to set personalities aside and act like mature men and settle. To me Bettman is a big source of the prpblem he is aacting like a high school principal not a negotiator.

To me they're all part of the problem.

At a party last night, I met someone (I won't mention his name) and in casual coveration, I brought up the hockey/CBA stuff and as it turns out, he works for the CBC/HNIC . He's an off-camera guy (otherwise I would have knew who he was) but it was obvious to me he was very well informed. - even before I learned who he was. Anyway, I told him I thought there'd be hockey in January and he sort of laughed at me a little... He believes wholeheartedly that the season is done - Not a prayer. He believes nobody at this juncture wants a season this short and what we are seeing now is just (for the most part) optics. His people feel the two sides are just too far apart. He also went into who/where people (including himself) have recently been assigned to other projects, etc. and that it would be a massive undertaking to recall them given the importance of these new projects.

Personally, I haven't given up hope. Part of me feels this is just the CBC making a guess here and will have to suck it up and scramble if they're wrong and that there is certainly room for them to be. I still believe that there is still something can be salvaged out of this season but man, this certainly didn't make me feel good about the state of affairs here. Whatever is going on in New Jersey/New York (wherever they are right now) certainly could be the final hail Mary pass.
