Maybe, but it might help the PR spin a little more if they made any attempt to look like they wanted to avoid a lockout, even if it was inevitable.

I don't think the owners as concerned with PR as they are with crushing the rebellion with one swift stroke.

So they should have gone through with sham negotiations with both parties entrenched in their positions for the sake of future PR spin? I get the frustration but the sad reality is that the lockout was almost certainly coming regardless. If they'd spent more time staring across the room at each other people would probably just be more angry at them for an unwillingness to move off their positions.

The lockout is going to end. That's inevitable. More time negotiating may have sped up the process. At least, it couldn't have hurt.

I agree though, the lockout was probably coming no matter when they started talks. It just looks bad for Daly to bust out that line now, just to seemingly frustrate people more.

I get that the default sentiment is usually anything the owners do is bad, but, shouldn't we be happy that they're actively looking to hear from the fans, even if it is to help further their own cause? I mean, it's more than the players have done in this area.

Well, it could though. If you create an air of intransigence and inability to bargain by virtue of having no movement off of your positions you very well can poison future negotiations when circumstances actually do change. You're right, the lockout is going to inevitably end but it's going to be by virtue of the owners coming off of their demands because of cracks from within/concerns about what the lockout is doing to their business long term or, and far more likely, a softening of the player's stance because of the pressure they feel from missing paychecks. That wasn't going to happen in May or February or even last year.

Realistically, if negotiations could have solved anything, they would have held them.

Come on. They've hired a focus group to try and shape their message so as to fare better in the public. That's not "listening to the fans". The players haven't done anything in that regard because their stance as honestly reported, as the article notes, is doing pretty well with the public.

Listening to the fans is easy. There are radio shows and message boards and, if you want, talking to them on the street. The NHL is trying to shape that debate not because the fans don't have a voice but because they don't like what that voice is saying.

I thought this was interesting though:

From the room's reaction, and Luntz's follow-up questions, it was clear that the group did not have a favorable impression of Gary Bettman. "A New York lawyer," one participant called him. Jonathon Gatehouse's Bettman bio points out how many times this specific phrase has been leveled at the commissioner, usually with the unspoken descriptor "Jewish." As if to hammer this point home, one focus group participant said: "I don't like him. He reminds me of Woody Allen."

Deputy commissioner and chief legal officer Bill Daly tested much better. He was seen as more "blue collar."
It's something I've noted from time to time over the years.

That is not what they are doing.  That would be gather feedback and changing behaviour to please the customers.  That is old school PR.  The new school PR is to do whatever you want and hire a psychologist for the best way to sell the customers on it.  As the article suggests they are thinking of using a buzz word "shared sacrifice" to sell the idea of a robbery at lock-out point.

Yes, in fact, Gilmour joined the Gretzky World (Euro) tour and thereafter, the NHLPA's Four-on-Four Tournament held in Hamilton, ON.

Prior to,  Gilmour had joined a Swiss team, Rapperswil, during the lockout.  Not feeling comfortable adjusting to a different style of play, he then decided to join Gretzky et al. for the tour.

Half of the lobby in office building is closed off for when the NHL and PA representatives arrive for the bargaining session.

Are you down there ready to give them a fist shaking of a lifetime when they arrive?

Gary and Bill are in the building.

how can you tell? Did a flock of 5,000 bats suddenly land on the roof of the building?

I was out there when he walked by, I heard someone yell at him to drop the puck and used another word that rhymed with puck to address him.

I'm surprised they were so easy on him..
