2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Maybe all Santos needed was a little more pressure to bring out his best. ;D

Jays are doing pretty well considering they haven't really been hitting at all so far this season. Arencibia and Rasmus have been especially putrid so far, both with such high expectations, both batting less than .100 so far. Even Bautista is sub .200 right now. Things could sure be a whole lot worse than 4-2 so far. :)

I have to admit I was a bit worried with Santos coming on and the tying runner on 2nd with 1 out.  He proved me wrong.

It was a strange sequence of pitches for Santos from what I saw. I was paying full attention, but it looked like he relied heavily on his off-speed stuff - which he had full control of today - but couldn't locate his fastball. The one I remember he threw was 97mph but off the plate. Almost everything else was off-speed.

It worked though, but I'm wondering if he's having trouble getting control of his fastball early on in the season. If he can get both his slider and fastball going, he'll be really hard to hit.

This may have been by design.  In the series opener, Pedroia was waiting for the first-pitch fastball and cranked it for a double, and it all spiralled down from there.  I was hoping to myself that Santos would not start off with a similar pitch, and he didn't.

He looked much more calm out there, which is nothing but a positive.  If the control follows suit, as you suggest, he could become overpowering.

Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia, big hockey fan, on the Stanley Cup playoffs, & his first round predictions...

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays placed closer Sergio Santos on the paternity list Friday and recalled left-hander Evan Crawford from double-A New Hampshire.

Santos flew to California on Wednesday after earning the save in Toronto's 3-1 win over the Boston Red Sox to join his wife for the birth of their second son. With the Blue Jays having Thursday off, he was expected to rejoin the team in time for Friday's game against Baltimore.

Teams can place a player on the paternity list for a least one day and a maximum of three.

The 25-year-old Crawford is 0-0 with a 0.00 earned-run average with New Hampshire. He has allowed three hits and two walks over four innings with five strikeouts.

Last season, Crawford made 45 appearances in relief for New Hampshire, posting a 3-5 record with two saves and a 3.35 ERA.

They have been used quite a bit so far this season, no?

Yeah, although that isn't so much the starters being awful as those two long games to start the year in Cleveland really boosted the numbers.  They have a top-10 ERA and are near the top of the league in innings pitched but are 2-2 with 3 blown saves

Don't worry about it guys. Ball games come and go but just think of all the fantastic memories Sergio Santos will have of this weekend.

Until you have a kid, you really just won't know and understand. Not that that will prevent you from commenting with authority in the meanwhile.

Grrr, that put me in my place. That'll learn me to state those super serious opinions I have with such authority and conviction.

And, hey, I have no doubt it'll be all kinds of wonderful for Sergio Santos. I fully endorse the Toronto Blue Jays encouraging their players indulge in every colour of the beautiful rainbow that is the human experience.
