2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

@baseballexis Travis Snider reached base twice today in extended. One long double, stolen base & slid thrice. Ripped his pants open, but wrist seems fine.

:o  What a buffoon.

After last night's game, Rasmus's wOBA is up to .326 from .304, and his wRC+ up to 104 from 89.  Last 14 games .351 AVG, 1.105 OP.

(Stat explanations: http://www.fangraphs.com/library/index.php/offense/woba/ & http://www.fangraphs.com/library/index.php/offense/wrc/)

Hopefully keeps trending upwards as he's hit very well in his limited time in the 2 spot.

It's definitely encouraging. He's OPSing 40 points higher than Lawrie or thereabouts and only 30 back of Bautista.

Some Blue Jay fans feel Snider's slow progress is due partly to his Hinske-eque approach to fitness and conditioning. Don't know if that has anything to do with his pants being unable to contain him.

Matt Smoral(6'8 LHP), Mitch Nay(HS 3B with power) and Tyler Gonzales(HS RHP, throws mid 90's) wraps up the night.

Smoral and Gonzales are already close to being signed, as well as a couple of the later round picks.

Not to dwell on the obvious but if it wasn't the aforementioned sliding that was the culprit but rather Snider's imagined girth I'm guessing they'd have gone with "burst at the seams" as opposed to "ripped".

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.

I guess that's a good thing. I wonder though if signing Smoral, who was thought to be a tough sign, means they're going to lowball someone else.

Well, they "punted" a lot of their picks on day 2, in that they took college seniors who are likely to sign for well below slot (a strategy a number of other teams used as well, since the "budget" is based on the first 10 rounds). For instance, their 4th round pick accepted a $5K bonus. The Jays are also likely to go over their budget up to just below the amount where they'd lose a draft pick.

I have to be honest, I really like the idea that not only is Snider out of shape but that he's wearing improperly sized pants to boot.

Improperly sized, inferior quality pants.

Well, you know, in this economy a smaller revenue team like the Jays have to make cutbacks somewhere. Might as well be the pants department.

So, in other words, the CBA's attempt to make sure that players are drafted on the basis of talent rather than signability has been a raging success.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

He has those from time to time... Always nice when it doesn't go the other way for him.

He's allowed 27 runs this season - 18 in 3 starts. He's been nothing short of excellent most nights this season.
