2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Jays now 2-7 on this recent road trip and have started to fall right out of the wild card race. This is the 16th straight series loss in Tampa Bay - heard on the radio this morning that the Major League record is 19 by the Yankees over the St. Louis Browns. A potentially dubious record, to be sure! :o

Maybe it's not all bad after all...

As the article states, it's worth noting that the Jays have used 50 different players in this injury-plagued year.

Sorry, I don't mean to pile it on but I actually found this very funny.

RT @Wilnerness590 #Bluejays lineup vs. #yankees Davis7, McCoy4, Encarnacion0, Cooper3, Sierra9, Mathis2, Gomes5, Gose8, Hechavarria6; HappvHughes #Jays

It's nice that the kids are playing but Gose and Hech are showing that their bats aren't MLB calibre/ready.  And while Sierra has a surprisingly good batting average, OPS+ is actually below average.

Nice catch by Davis to pull back a home run.

The bullpen made things interesting again, almost allowing the Yankees to come back from 10-1 down.

Anthropoulos on how he sees the Jays' situation, his near future plans (for free agency signings), his views on the Jays needs, etc., etc..

He....went as far as to suggest that the Blue Jays bullpen and offence -- when healthy -- have the makings of being "championship calibre."

Romero continues his poor showing, and the championship calibre bullpen can't bail him out. Pulled after a walk and a hit batter to start the 7th tonight, Lincoln comes in and gives up two home runs to put the game away. 9-4 Chicago after the Jays had just come back from 4-0 down to tie the game.

Kevin Comer was the PTBNL in the Houston trade.  That just takes the move from head scratcher to stupidity.

Houston Trades: Brandon Lyon (pending free agent but good reliever), JA Happ (hasn't been good since 2010 but has shown ability before) and David Carpenter (27 year old AAAA fodder)

Toronto Trades: Francisco Cordero (career is probably over); Ben Francisco (waste of roster spot but somewhat capable bench bat); Carlos Perez (former highly regarded prospect but passed by as a catching prospect due to organizational depth - probably more of a depth system catcher); Joe Musgrove (2011 1st round pick); Asher Wojciechowski (2010 1st round pick); David Rollins (forgettable 22 year old in A ball but putting up reasonably good stats over his minor league career); and then Kevin Comer (2011 1st round pick)

Three first round picks for two controllable years of a guy who was getting hit around in the NL.  That's just a silly waste of prospects.

Former Jay Dewayne Wise having a pretty good series against the Jays. So far 4-for-10 with 2 homers and 6 RBI.

Edit: ChiSox feeding on the Laffey Taffy. Three solo home runs, now the Jays are down 3-2.

Edit 2: And that will do it. Former Jay and punk Alex Rios hits a three run homer off of normally reliable Darren Oliver to put the game away, now 6-2. Jays will lose 3 of 4 and lose the season series to the Sox for the first time since 2006. This collapse is Leaflike in its magnitude, although with a lot more injuries contributing to it.

White Sox pitcher Jesse Crain, who was on the mound at the time, was left shaken by the episode.

"I said a little prayer for him after everything started going again," Crain said. "You don't ever want to see that."

You need major league depth. You can't just sit on prospects. Besides those guys were so far down the depth chart, the Jays will probably have moved to Boise before they were seen in the majors, if they even make it. Besides, there's a draft every year for a reason. Prospects come in, prospects go out. Sometimes, you need to try and make your team better today.

It's a head scratcher on the surface, but, word is Comer hasn't been able to recover his velocity, so, his stock has likely dropped since the draft. Wojciechowski is a guy I liked, but, he is an older prospect considering the level he was pitching at and projects as a bullpen guy. Musgrove . . . I think he can be a middle of the rotation starter, but, at the end of the day, these guys are replaceable and/or have already been replaced/upgraded on with recent picks and IFA signings. It's not a great deal, considering the return, but, as bad deals go, it's very much on the mild end of things.
