Gosh, it's refreshing to see a guy defy the expectations for a contract year.

He has all the tools to be a really really good pitcher, but where did the whole "highest paid pitcher" stuff come from?  I didn't get it.

Yet another poor start from a Jays starter. Only Happ has had a good start, and even then he only went five and a third. The rest have been mediocre to abysmal. These guys really need to start eating some innings. The bullpen is going to start getting really tired really quickly.

I'm actually surprised they got the game in today, what with this supposed massive storm in the area.

Some positives in a lowly season-i ...

...in nine games the Blue Jays have stolen eight bases as a team without getting caught even once, and that Jose Reyes is on pace to shatter the club?s stolen base record with 72.

I hear a lot of people saying maybe the team hasn't "gelled" yet... but you go into the batter's box by yourself, you pitch from the mound all alone.  How would "gelling" explain all the high-profile starters collapsing?  Or a bunch of hitters not hitting?

In hockey, I can understand how a player changes teams and has to learn new systems, new defensive coverage, his linemates don't position themselves like his old ones did.  But in baseball, no matter what team you're on, first base doesn't move, you're still throwing to the same spot... how much does "team chemistry" really factor into it?

It's funny, I just read this about a minute after watching a part of Ken Burns' documentary "Baseball: The Tenth Inning", and they were talking about how everyone thought Joe Torre's first season with the Yankees the team had great chemistry.  Torre himself said he didn't buy that as a reason for their success - that winning creates the chemistry, not the other way around.

I would agree with that, and with what you said.

The only places where chemistry really comes into play on the field is between the infield defence (specifically 2B and SS, but 3B and SS is important as well) and between pitchers and catchers. Otherwise, everything else is pretty routine and doesn't change all that much from team to team.

That being said, being comfortable around your teammates, liking them as people and such certainly can't hurt, and, in some cases, probably helps.

I guess it makes sense: more clubhouse camaraderie --> more positive individual mindsets --> better individual performance.  Seems a stretch to hang all of our abysmal suckage on it, though (as some commentators seem to be doing).

But hey, maybe they just need a guy to go in there and crank the volume on the boombox.

Only if he changes the music first. You gotta know your limits with a boom box. A boom box is not a toy!

What is with the walks? Most allowed in the majors this season.  Can't get out of a 1st inning without giving up a run either, or without a lot of pitches.

They don't trust the defence. Trying to strike everyone out. Hard to blame them with the Grand Canyon between 3rd and short, and that pylon at 2nd.
