2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Reyes could be back in 8 weeks not 3 months?

Brett Lawrie is back tonight, while Sergio Santos Sirotka is back on the DL.

The rotation this time through has been much better.  Still waiting for a starter to pitch at least 7 innnings however.

The batting with runners in scoring position has been pathetic.  Hopefully that turns around soon, but on the positive side, at least they are eking out some of these close games regardless.

Janssen was always a better option than Santos for closer in my mind. I'm not a fan of power closers. Santos for example, only throws 2 pitches so you can pretty much just sit on a fastball. He's also much more a thrower than a pitcher. He just tries to throw everything by you. Janssen keeps the ball low, reducing the chances for extra base hits or home runs, and throws 5 different pitches all over the zone which is much better for keeping hitters off balance.

Yep, too bad. Jays couldn't come all the way back and lose 4-3.

Nice to see Johnson with the strong start, though.

Another abysmal performance last night. Happ was hapless and the hitters were impotent. Rasmus showed us why Gibby pinch hit Davis for him the night before with four strikeouts against left-handed pitching last night.

Jays seem to strike out a lot.

Man im frustrated with this team right now.

What im going to comment on particularly though, is the seemingly cry baby fashion in which this team carries itself. I don't play professional sports, but I am required to perform at a very high physical level in my career and im more than familiar with the ins and outs of sports/training related injuries. Jose Reyes aside;

Being out of a lineup for something like a strained oblique, or 'back tightness' , sore ankle, or whatever else is getting ridiculous. It seems like every week someone on this team is out for some outrageous "injury" that could easily be played through. Are these guys just wanting the time off to get paid doing nothing or what ?

Not to mention the timelines for their injuries are also ridiculous. Weeks to months for pulled muscles. I've seen guys return to work faster from gunshot wounds. I'm not kidding.

They're malingering cry babies and I don't know if thats just the culture of baseball or what but how no one else seems to call them on these "injuries" is downright incredible.

For the amount of money you're getting paid, you can f-ing play BASEBALL with a sore lower back. It happens. I have a sore x or y on any given day of the week, as do many MILLIONS of others.

While I sometimes question professional athlete's injuries, if Bautista can't swing the bat because of his back, what good is he in the line up?

I'm suggesting he probably could, he just doesn't feel like it right now. I've seen it too many times to count in other areas I've worked where guys will use just about any excuse to take it easy for a few days or a few weeks because they just don't really care at that particular time. Despite being paid millions, I'm not inclined to believe baseball players are enhanced humans that are immune to this kind of lazy disease effect. There seems to be some kind of culture for it in baseball specifically.

Especially when you consider far more physically demanding and strenuous sports like hockey or football where guys have and do play with broken bones, concussions and other ailments to some degree of effectiveness - sometimes no one even knows they were hurt until after the fact or it's revealed in the off season.

These 'athletes' , I use that term loosely for baseball, are treated like precious commodities and im sure the owners would have them wrapped in bubble packing if it were feasible so when they say "my x hurts im not playing" they're going to let them sit out.

I'm just noticing a pattern here with this guy (bautista) and Lawrie specifically.

Ever had back spasms?

Tell me how you'd like playing baseball with it, specifically swinging a bat: http://www.cedars-sinai.edu/Patients/Health-Conditions/Back-Spasm.aspx

Lawrie has a history of sitting out games? My opinion of him is that he'd do anything to win a game. Watching him in the dugout during the World Baseball Classic he appeared to almost be in tears because he wanted to be out there so badly.

I'm sure some players have cried wolf, but my opinion is Lawrie isn't one of them.
