2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Canada getting clubbed by Italy 6-2 in the 6th. Looks like this tournament could be over pretty fast for Canda if they don't get their act together - Italy already beat Mexico and would be 2-0.

And they aren't even from Italy.

SportsnetJamie

Whether they win or lose this game, that Canada has to play a bunch of Americans who've never even been to Italy is a joke.

So huge brawl happened in the top of the 9th inning in Canada-Mexico.

Yea, Canada led off the top of the 9th with a bunt single when they were up 9-3. The Mexican 3rd baseman told the pitcher to hit the next batter. He threw inside and missed hitting the batter and after a warning he drilled the batter with 3rd pitch and all hell broke loose.

Mexico wasn't happy with the bunt single with 9-3 score, but run differential matters in the tournament.

Yeah, just reading that they were also upset over some takedown slides or something earlier in the game.

Yep and bottom line their ability to advance is going to hinge on them beating the US in their 3rd game (barring some kind of absurdity where Italy ends up going 3-0).

Considering the US lost to Mexico, anything is possible in this tournament. The win today should ensure that Canada will not have to qualify for the next WBC. Head to head is the 1st tiebreaker for a 2 team tie. A 3 team tie at 1-2 means break out the calculators.

"Nobody will be surprised that Team Canada was involved," said Larry Walker, Canada's first-base coach who later was grazed by a foul ball thrown back at him from the stands. "Because that's what they'll say. All those damn hockey players. I don't think this was necessarily started by us. We were invited into it, so we danced."

8th inning, Canada just scored a run against the U.S. to trail 4-3.  Men at 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs.  Good game.

Yep, but 5-4 not 4-3.  Canada will at least get Votto up in the 9th, can't let them get any more.

EDIT: Why is Whitt still the manager?

Yep, you're right about the score.  And it pretty much went to hell after I posted about the game... :(

Happ isn't too happy with his likely role with the Jays this year (Sun Link). Heard some discussion about this on Primetime Sports last night too.

Not sure how I feel about this. I can understand his competitiveness and wanting to be a starter, but I might have liked to see a more team-first attitude. We will see what happens moving forward.

I get why he would be upset though, he has been a starter in the majors for 4 seasons and now Toronto trades for him and assigns him the minors.

I can see why he would be upset, but I can completely understand how he is suddenly #6 on the depth chart. I wonder why they don't put him in the bullpen as long relief. Also, I wonder how long a leash Romero gets this year.

They haven't sent him to the minors (at least, not yet) - they've put him in the bullpen.

I'm assuming he is buffalo bound based on what the media around the team are saying.

Only because he has an option (IIRC) and Cecil doesn't...which to me doesn't make sense because Cecil isn't a very good pitcher.

...who won 15 games a few years ago.  The better asset management approach is to keep as many players you think are good as you can.  The Jays aren't running a popularity contest this year; it's all about winning.  I see no issue with this and if I were J.A. Happ I'd keep my mouth closed and give thanks for being part of what is sure to be an excellent ball club.

Kind of hard to have that perspective if you're not actually with the ball club though.

Especially if you have already proven that you are a major-league ready, and capable, starter.
