2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

I'm less concerned about the strike outs than the walks, or really just the OBP in general.

I guess for me it just goes all together.  The Jays swing wildly at pitches, don't take the pitcher deep into counts and decrease the chance that he is going to miss his spot.  It lets the opposition go deeper into games, and simply striking out means they aren't even reading the ball all that well because they aren't even making contact, let alone good contact.

The OBP is definitely a problem, but the SLG is what is really concerning to me given how bad the OBP is.  They are still only 13th in the league (9th in the AL) so not only are they not hitting/walking, they aren't even getting that much power out of the few hits they are managing.

Yep, 9-17, 9.5 games out of first.

At the moment, three of the best five records in the major leagues are from the east. That will even out as the teams play each other more often.

I think the distressing thing, really, is that there hasn't really been a bright spot. They're second last in the AL in OPS+, 10th in ERA+ and 11th in DRS. If you can't hit, can't pitch and can't field...

...and when one comes to think of it, this was the team that was supposed to have it all...at least, on paper...

Oh, wait a minute,  that's why.  On the field, they are another reality...

I'll go with the belief that the team is getting their bad month out of their system in April as opposed to August/September.

Would have been nice if the offense picked up the pitching even a couple times this week to turn those 1-run losses into wins.

The Jays better hope the Leafs can win a round, the city won't notice they're one of the worst teams in baseball for another month or so.

Solid first outing by Romero on Saturday.

7 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 5 hits, 4 K's, no BBs.  14 of the out came by groundball.

Anthopoulos was said to be impressed.  Good to see him starting off strong in his rebuild to the pitcher he was.

Who calls the game for the Jays? Is it Arencibia or do they call it from the bench?

Catchers usually call the pitches, and the bench generally controls the strategy (like when to pitch around someone, intentional walks, etc).

Sometimes they call the pitches from the bench too. I'm just wondering because I was trying to figure out why Arencibia kept setting up away after Napoli fouled off 5 pitches away in the first inning tonight. Was that his decision or was he being told what to do?

Most managers don't like to call too many pitches if they can avoid it. The catchers, pitchers and coaches have meetings before the game to discuss strategies for the different bats in the line-up, so, JPA was probably just basing his pitch calling and such off of those meetings.

Ok, so Arencibia calls the game.

I didn't see the error, only heard it on the radio - was it Izturis' fault? Kawasaki got the error, but Hayhurst suggested that Izzy should have had it.

This is getting absurd.

It wasn't a great throw, but he got a glove on it. It's all on Izturis.
