Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the player gets to decide if it's a 1 or 2 year deal in arbitration? If the arbitrator offers 7+ million I wonder if he takes a 2 year deal to reach free agency.

That depends on who takes who to arbitration. In this case, since Subban choose arbitration, the team chooses whether it's a 1 or 2 year deal, and, that decision is made before the hearing. It's going to be a one year contract.

What I wonder is, if the Habs don't take him to arbitration next summer, would he consider doing being a hold out.

He's done it before.

That's true. I actually forgot about that. It'll probably end up being a moot point, as there's a good chance the Habs take him to arbitration just to avoid the possibility. If he hasn't signed a long-term extension by the beginning of the 15/16 season, I think there's a very good chance he leaves as a UFA that summer.

They're really playing with fire here.

Markov is 36 this year and had 3 seasons of bad health before this past year. They don't have anyone anywhere close to Subban or Markov's skill set in the wings to replace either (not counting FA that is).

Paying Subban more than they want can be seen as an insurance policy on Markov in the first 3-4 years, and paying Subban in his prime for the rest of the deal.

It's a no-brainer to me.

Eller getting 3.5M for 4 years after the season he just had? That just seems like a big FU to Subban IMO.

If Leafs fans are smart they'll give him an SO the first time he's on the ice at the ACC this season.

NHL stars (including Kessel) join tennis ace Roger Federer in a ball hockey game on the court, pre-Rogers Cup event:

Roger Federer    @rogerfederer
Got schooled by some NHL players today.. Had a blast!

"I?ve always been a big hockey fan,? he said. ?I?ve always collected NHL jerseys, so it was great playing today.

Kimmo Timonen is dealing with blood clots in his leg and will be out "long term."  He's 39 and just signed a 1 year deal with Philly, so there's a good chance this may be it for him.  Had 35 points in 77 games last season as a 38-39 year old.  If this is it, he's had a nice little career.

Blood clots in his lungs as well

Pretty serious condition though they can probably dissolve the clots.

Blood thinners can make it very difficult to continue to play because bruising can cause internal bleeding that won't stop in a normal time frame if he has to remain on blood thinners.

Not enough details to know for sure whether he can play again any time soon or not.

Thanks for that - I must have skimmed right past the lungs part.  Pretty important detail!

Del Zotto signed with Philly on a 1 year deal.

I should have said so previously as I thought they might do that to replace Timonen. It wasn't hard to think of Del Zotto because the UFA dman market is so thin.

Further evidence that Timonen is probably done.

Are you aware of what Timonen's contract status would be then in this case if he were not to play this year?...assuming of course that nobody knew that he wouldn't be able to play.

LTIR would be my guess, his cap hit is only 2M though.

I thought that, but you'd think that Philly would grieve this?  They wouldn't want to pay him a dime.

It might be an insured contract and even if it isn't, I'm not sure the Flyers would make s fuss over a relatively small sum of money to a long time player like Kimmo Timonen.

What would the basis for the grievance be? That he deceived them about his blood clots?
