2014-2015 NHL Waivers/ Buyout Thread

Crazy. Lombardi could have used a compliance buyout on him last summer but didn't basically out of loyalty.

And yet right now I bet Richards wishes he did.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Expectation is that if Richards clears waivers tomorrow he'll be re-assigned to AHL Manchester. Unless of course Kings can work out a trade

mayorNHL: From what I've gathered, #LAKings were working on multiple deals to trade Richards over the weekend. Final one fell through late last night.

TSNBobMcKenzie: TOR/CGY believed to be teams talking recently to LA about Richards trade. Guessing Leafs/Flames were trying to move their bad contracts.

Honestly, unless they're willing to trade him straight up for Clarkson, I don't think there's a deal to be made there around the league. He's really fallen off that much.

If it was Clarkson, says a lot that the Kings would rather go this route than take that on.

Maybe, but, at the same time, I totally understand them wanting to see if they can get rid of him without having to take on salary before making that kind of deal. If it wasn't for the NMC, I imagine the Leafs would do the same thing in this situation with Clarkson.

Presented without comment:

@CorsiHL
Just going to put this out there - 5v5 PTS/60 for this season:

Mike Richards: 1.27
Tyler Bozak: 1.25
David Clarkson: 1.24

Mike Richards for free...I don't think that helps teams trying to move their overrated or injury prone players leading up to the deadline very much. Colin Greening is probably breathing a little easier now tho

Or is he?

DarrenDreger: Unless a trade for Colin Greening surfaces very quickly, expect Greening on waivers as early as tomorrow.

To the surprise of no one:

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Mike Richards clears waivers

Also:

DarrenDreger: Colin Greening on waivers today.

Apparently it was Richards and Toffoli for Phaneuf. I don't know why we would trade bad contracts so we can get a youthful player packaged in. It seems detrimental overall.

Toffoli was just a name that LA didn't want involved, Toronto could have been asking for even more than that.

But still, I don't see how any deal involving Richards would be worthwhile unless LA was eating some serious salary, and even then...

Question: Now that Richards has cleared waivers and is heading to Manchester, if he is recalled, does he then go on waivers again and is the claiming team only liable for part of his contract or is that no longer the case?

I'm actually a little bit surprised that they ended up assigning him to the AHL. Figured they just waived him to see if anybody would bite. His contract is definitely awful, but he's still a fine bottom-6 forward.

I think the reality of it all means the Leafs aren't going to be able to dump Phaneuf without taking back a bad contract or eating some of Phaneuf's term in a trade.
Most fans and the media have been dumping on Phaneuf for what seems like forever you don't honestly think the Leafs are going to get a great return for him in a trade do you?

Hey, it's a league where real-life GMs actually traded valuable assets for Scott Gomez, and even signed Bobby Ryan to a $50M contract.  Crazy deals happens.

Hey, in fairness Bobby Ryan has been scoring goals at an almost Tyler Bozak-level pace the last couple of seasons. That doesn't come cheap.
