2015-2016 NHL Thread

I can't think of a time besides yesterday that it was enforced but I remember a lot of times and a lot sports where crap got thrown on the field and it wasn't enforced.

Because usually what happens is fans throw stuff, they get warnings, and they stop throwing things. It's not a one strike and you're out policy.

Most sports don't hand out minor penalties but that's because most sports don't have minor penalties.

The fans threw rats, and were clearly warned that doing so again would earn the Panthers a penalty. They did it again and earned a penalty. Then they did it again and earned another penalty.

In other sports, they're a little more lenient, because the stakes are higher. As Nik pointed out, the penalty is often that the game is forfeited. Those sports require more frequent or more significant disruption to hand out those penalties. In the NHL, the punishment doesn't automatically cost the team the game. It's not a frequent thing, but it happens. In fact, I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time this has happened at Panthers game in their history. I'm pretty sure they got dinged for it in the playoffs back in their Cup final run.

So...why shouldn't fans of the away team just go to town throwing stuff then?  If there were a few hundred or even a few dozen how would refs tell the difference, heck you could even go the extra mile and wear home jerseys if you were committed enough.

"Hey Jim, what are you doing Friday night?"

"Oh, you know, I thought I'd maybe hit up a bar, maybe grab some drinks and watch the game"

"Better idea, you and me fly hundreds of miles to watch the Leafs play the Panthers. After we pay for the flight and hotels we'll buy tickets that are within throwing distance of the ice and, after coordinating with a couple dozen other Leafs fans in clever disguise, throw a bunch of crap on the ice!"

"Wouldn't we get thrown out of the building and maybe arrested?"

"Yeah but the Leafs might get a power-play!"

"We should stop being friends."

Well when you put it that way...

Why do it as an away team fan? #TankNation

Chicago?s Duncan Keith suspended six games for high sticking on Minnesota?s Charlie Coyle. http://ow.ly/10coHn

Keith was suspended 6 games. So 5 regular season + 1 playoff game.

So he'll be well rested for the Blackhawks playoff drive.

The Boston Bruins, currently 1 point out of a playoff spot with only a few games to go, are losing 6-0 to Chicago right now in the 2nd period.

I was surprised to see them in 9th after last night's games. They've been atrocious in their last 10 games played. I really thought this would be the year that the Wings broke their streak (or Philly would fall short).

Kane's 4 point game pushed him to 100 points.  He's just the 4th player since 2010-2011 to do that.  It's also just the 27th time since the start of the salary cap era.

10 seasons (first year after the lockout) we had 7.

Patrick Roy criticized Matt Duchene for celebrating scoring his 30th goal of the season last night:

?The thing I have a hard time with is the reaction of Duchy after his scores. It?s a 4-0 goal. Big cheer. Are you kidding me? What is that? I mean, it?s not the reflect that we want from our guys. Not at all,? said Roy.

Craig Button talked about it on TSN, and for the 2nd time in the last little while I agree with him (Dubois! Dubois!): http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/was-roy-right-to-criticize-duchene~841659

I heard about Roy's comments before I saw the actual celebration. From how upset Roy was about it I figured Duchene launched his stick in the air, break-danced on the ice for 45 seconds, and then caught his stick with his teeth as it came back down. But the celebration really wasn't that over-the-top or anything.
