2016-2017 NHL Thread

4. Patrik Laine
https://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2017/8/22/16173392/nhl-top-25-under-25-rankings-2017-patrik-laine-winnipeg-jets

Lowest rank of 12!

Best 25: What about Noah Hanifin? How good is he projected to be? Obviously we selected Marnier over him which at the time I wasn't to happy about because of our dire need on the blue line. I just haven't heard a whole lot of Hanifin? Is he working on a slow build like Hedmen or is not projected to end up where they thought he would?

From his draft alone, most people have Werenski and Provorov ahead of him.

Pastrnak. 70pt 21y.o. Lowest: Not Ranked.

This is insanity.

3. Nikita Kucherov

!!!! IT'S HAPPENING

Highest rank: No. 2
Lowest rank: Not ranked

Still funny.

Well, from what appears to be a completely insane process they still seem to have managed to come up with a pretty inoffensive/not terribly interesting list.

https://sports.yahoo.com/henrik-zetterberg-may-quit-two-years-says-contract-cap-trickery-234731170.html

Zetterberg essentially admits that his 12 year contract was to circumvent the cap and that he probably won't play the final 2 years of the deal (which pay him $1mil per year).

#2.  Auston Matthews

https://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2017/8/24/16190950/nhl-top-25-under-25-rankings-2017-auston-matthews-maple-leafs

Lowest Rank of #6, which I can actually live with but don't agree with.

It was within the rules at the time but I would still like the NHL attempt to fine the team/player for the contract. Why did this go thorough and not Kovalchuk's everyone knew it was BS and now they acknowledged their intent. Friggin cheaters. Just get rid of the cap if your not going to enforce it. Datsyuk contract to ARI last year to boot.

Robidas island... Pronger works for the friggin NHL and still has contract on the books what a joke. Let owner's manage their own budgets.

There would have to be a medical professional willing to commit fraud for that to work. Hossa's condition sounds fairly serious.

r/hockey is giving me the Kucherov vs Matthews fight I was hoping to stir up.

Ranking last season's performance: Kucherov > Matthews
Ranking potential/ceiling: Matthews > Kucherov

Not necessarily. I'd bet just about any hockey player after a long career has enough chronic issues that a medical professional could say they shouldn't be playing for one reason or another.

You want the NHL to retroactively fine teams for doing things that were legal at the time?

Didn't the NHLput penalties on these type of contracts in last CBA for contracts already signed?  Or am I remembering that incorrectly?
