2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs - General Discussion

Boston beat Tampa 4-2 tonight. So they've got the top spot in the Atlantic now and still have a game in hand on the Lightning. The Bruins are 42-10-7 since November 15th. Thinking we're probably playing Tampa 1st round.

Leafs clinch playoffs.

And 3rd in the Atlantic at least, officially. Home ice in the first round is still mathematically a possibility, as is 1st in the division, but, really, just mathematically.

How do folks feel about pick your opponent?  Because I predict it's coming.  It'll filter up from the low minors to the AHL and then to the NHL.

They do that in one of the British league competitions and it seems that some of the weaker teams who realise they have minimal chance of advancing (the game are played as a 2 game series with aggregate score as the deciding factor) have chosen teams that give them a better chance of a large attendance to bring in more gate money than picking the team most likely for them to be able to beat

I look at Boston and for whatever reason I think their record shouldn't be that high.

I fear Boston more than I fear Tampa Bay right now.  We would be very lucky to face Tampa.  Mind you we would still probably have to go through Boston to get to the Stanley Cup.

Theres no easy road. You probably have to go through Pitt as well.

PPP had me going this morning reporting the Kyle Dubas as new GM of Hurricanes....and then I remembered the date...almost upchucked when I read it.

Any updates on Dermott?  I thought he was having x-rays or tests done today?  Or did Babcock say the x-rays came back negative last night?  I heard he said something.  I guess we will hear something tomorrow during the morning skate.

I'm here for a Dermott update too

Where did this guy come from, highly underrated and a great pick. Lets hope he makes the playoffs.
I don't know if he was underrated. Leafs picked him 34th overall. By all accounts he was doing very well in the AHL so when he got his shot he played like he had down there and the Leafs couldn't send him back.
I think Simpson said last night that he's been on the ice for only 8 goals against in the last 20 ganes. Let's hope he's ok by time the playoffs come around. We ll need him.

This is relevant to us since it looks like we're probably playing Tampa 1st round, Stamkos is currently day-to-day with a lower body injured. Likely happened from this play:

I'm sure the Lightning are being cautious and it's not a very serious injury, but if Stamkos isn't 100% that'll be a big deal.

For a second round draft pick in his first year in the NHL he is playing absolutely outstanding and he's doing better than people would have expected.  He's playing at the level of a first round pick IMO.  The Leafs' scouts definitely got it right with this one.

Wow guys we really dodged a bullet here.  Dermott sounds like he'll hopefully be ok for the playoffs.

Too bad Dermott can't dodge pucks.
