2017 Off-season Trades/Signings Discussion

The Lightning re-signed Tyler Johnson to a 7 year/35 million dollar deal.

He's not coming off the best couple of years and I don't really think he's a 70+ point player the way he was a couple of years ago but that's still a very team friendly deal for a guy signing away all of his best UFA deals.

Either way, I'm just glad that we live in a world where the NHL decided that state income tax laws and proximity to nice golf courses are advantages teams can exploit while being very rich because of a large and dedicated fan base isn't.

This is something that I wish was addressed in any cap league.  Salaries should maybe be considered post-tax to account for this stuff.  You can't account for every thing (real estate costs, proximity other services, etc.) but taxes seems like an easy one.

If you have to pay an extra million dollars to match take home salaries, why is that considered reasonable.

I bet if the Leafs/Habs/Rangers/Kings had the tax advantage there would be a big stink about it.  The fact that its the southern markets where the NHL is trying its damnest to attract new fans that have the advantage it means the NHL is happy to give that advantage to those teams.

St. Louis would be making a pretty big mistake by going with a bridge deal here.

Right? He wants a not that heavy 1-year (which is already kind of odd). And they only want 2 years?

Isn't that the only 2 options available in arbitration?

Oh yeah, arbitration. Still, a rather low ask, but probably due to points measures.

Like, Subban bad?

I don't see him winning the Norris next season but like Subban Parayko hasn't hit 40 points before his ELC was up. That's a big (but completely arbitrary) benchmark for defencemen when it comes to contracts. I can definitely see a similar offensive outburst from Parayko now that he's going to get more PP time with Shattenkirk gone.

Maybe. Although there's a chance the McDavid deal has somewhat altered the idea of bridge deals vs. long term deals. Parayko might not be willing to give them any sort of a discount on a long term deal.

I don't know...these guys are human, and dangling $40m of guaranteed money (for example) in front of them can certainly be security they're looking for...they've seen plenty of guys get injured over the years, and I think that factors into anyone's decision making, more or less.

These guys are human, sure, but they're also athletes in their early 20's.

Again, though, I didn't say the bridge deal concept might be dead, just that the McDavid deal may have altered its parameters. I'm sure you're still able to buy UFA years, just maybe not at quite the discount you once were. Especially in a case like this where Parayko isn't 21 or 22. He's 24, which is the same age Subban was when his bridge deal ended. UFA status is pretty close for him.

Pretty surprised to see Daniel Winnik still available out there. For some reason I thought he was 35+ but he's only 32 years old. Coming off a pretty good season for the Caps it seems. Scored 25 points in 72 games (same rate as our buddy Zachary) in 4th line minutes playing with Beagle and Wilson. Played a lot of PK minutes. Possession stats were 50% but that was with the toughest zone starts too. Played very low event hockey but came out way ahead in GF%.

He's coming off a 2-year deal that had a cap hit of $2.25mil. If he's looking for something like that again I guess it's a little much for a 4th liner (*cough* *cough*).

If we trade out Komarov (+ others) for futures/defense before the season starts and free up the contract slots, I can see us easily taking a third go with him.

Marleau - Matthews - Marner
Leivo - Nylander - Kapanen
Winnik - Kadri - Brown
Martin - Moore - Hyman

If we didn't have Martin or Lou, we'd have Winnik already.

$5.5mil AAV. Seems fair. About what I expected for a long-term deal at this point.

Pretty much what I would've wanted us to sign him for if he came through via trade as an RFA.
