Feels like vintage Kovalchuk, racking up points on a terrible team. A perennial negative on the stat line.

Sorry, has never been a favorite of mine.

Yeah, a Selke winner with 92 points last season...where's the negative again?
Not Kopitar... Kovalchuk.

It wasn't his fault that the Thrashers sucked and he literally carried the Devils to a Stanley Cup Finals appearance (while playing with a herniated disc).
I did say I wasn't a fan of his.  A decent run to final with the Devils no doubt but "vintage Kovalchuk" in my opinion did not elevate those around him or play a 2-way game.

There are lots of terrific, hall of fame wingers who weren't good defensive players and "didn't elevate those around him" just reads like blaming him again for the team being bad.

I have no idea how I read that as Kopitar.  My apologies.

But yeah, weird move by a guy whose return seemed to be motivated by wanting to win a Cup.

Anyone that interested in winning a cup doesn't leave the NHL for 5 years, and the Kings have hardly been a consistent group over the last bunch of seasons. I'd wager it was 100% contract/ lifestyle related.

Yeah, once he chose the Kings and got the money/term he got I never really thought he was primarily motivated by the Cup.

I don't think that makes him uncompetitive or whatever, I don't think anyone expected the Kings to be this bad, but I think he was content to take the biggest offer from what he thought would be a pretty good team.

His initial exit from the league was for mutual benefit: he gets to raise his young family back home in Russia, the KHL draws a marquee name from the NHL just in time for him to headline the home team for the Sochi Olympics (which is a bigger deal than the Stanley Cup for them)*, and the Devils get out of an onerous financial burden before it actually started to hit the books hard.

* If I recall correctly, NHL participation in the Olympics was touch and go and not decided until just after Kovalchuk 'retired'.

These are moves calculated for winning what mattered to him.

More change of scenery trades!

Big offence upgrade for the Oilers, trading a guy with one goal for a guy with one goal and also one assist.

My god... did the Oilers actually win a trade (albeit a pretty minor one)?p

Win might be a little generous. I?d say more ?not lose,? which is still something. They get a small offensive gain but a big drop in I dividual possession stats (especially looking at the rel numbers). I?d call that a saw off, maybe.

That's double, so my math says they super won this trade.

Interestingly, exactly the same cap hits, and both have one more year after this one on their deals.

Actually they both have totals of 1 goal and 1 assist, so everything is the same!

Curious to see how Strome does without having the offensive black hole that is Lucic as his most common linemate.

Chris Wideman was traded by the Ottawa senators to the Edmonton Oilers for a Conditional 2020 6th rd pick. Slowly but surely, they're paring away the Uber group.

If they're getting rid of the Uber group, I'll gladly take Chabot off their hands.

That must have been a hell of a phone conversation.

Agent: Good news Chris! You're getting out of Ottawa!

Wideman: Oh thank god! They're such a trainwreck, I'd prefer to be on literally almost any other team... well except...

Agent: Yeah, about that...

It would never happen but if they don't sign him, Duchene would be a fun deadline pick-up.
