2018 Toronto Blue Jays General Season Thread

If the Jays blow up the team to rebuild, payroll will drop regardless as they shed contracts/trade pieces for futures. The only danger is if when it comes time to spend money again and the team is good, fans don't return. I don't think that's particularly likely.

Yeah. If anything, we've seen this city loves to support a winning team. Also, the Jays' payroll is a small line item on the Rogers balance sheet. As long as it doesn't drive the team too far into the red, an extra $50M or so is nothing to them. The money will be there if the team is good enough to need it.

I hope they trade happ before his next start while his trade value is so high. After his last start his era is quite low. I say trade him now.

I don?t know why Martin is getting a free pass. His defence is sub par and he can?t hit anymore. But he can sure frame the hell out of a pitch.

He's definitely not hitting well but even with his batting average as low as it is he's still getting on base at a better clip than a bunch of guys in the lineup.

The Washington Narional (37-29) visit the Toronto Blue Jays (30-38) foe a three-game interleague series at the Eogers Centre.

The Nationals, second in the N.L.East 1.5 GBL Atlanta Braves, and also in the second WC spot, sport among the top pitchers in the league in Max Scherzer and "overrated" hitter Bryce Haeper who leads in HRs as well as Walks, and Juan Soto described as one of the team's best young up & comers this year.

As for the Blue Jays, they sit fourth in their division 16.0 GBL Bosron and 13.5 GB the second WC spot.  A tall order for a team such as the season the Jays are having.  Randall Grichuk has been on a tear of late (since coming off the DL) hitting .308 in this June month.

LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!

Jays defeat Nationals 6-5  Friday thanks to Yangveris Solarte's three RBI night -- a solo and a two-run homer -- plus add  Devon Travis' two-run home run, all contributed to solidifying Toronto's victory.
solidified Toronto's victory.

Jays starter Aaron Sanchez lasted six innings giving up three runs but striking out eight.  Seungwan Oh got the win and Ryan Tepera closed out for the save.

I'll be at the game tomorrow.  I'm gonna roast.  45C with the humidex apparently.  It should be fun though.  I've got to enjoy the seasons tickets while they last.  This will be the last year we are doing it.  My dad and my brother in law are taking a huge loss on the tickets this year.  A lot of the games are only selling for $3 a ticket when their cost is $15.  So next year we're just going to buy a 10 pack or something.  It's too bad because we have front row 500 level seats, they are pretty great, and back a few years ago our cost on them was something like $6 a ticket, we could sell them at a huge profit, and we got perks like $200 worth of concessions per ticket and all sorts of seasons ticket holder events and benefits.  Since then they have more than doubled the cost of our tickets and they took away the $200 gift cards.  So we can't do it any more, it's a total waste.  I'm sure a lot of seasons ticket holders are in the same boat.  I predict attendance will plummet next season.  And they will lose at least half of their seasons ticket holders.

I think it will be hard to generate a ton of sympathy for season ticket holders based on the relative profitability of their seats on the resale market.

This season there has been no profitability.  It's nothing but red ink.

Imagine not being able to profit off of your baseball tickets, it's easy if you try.

You're making absolutely zero sense.  Your post is incoherent actually.  Do you own Blue Jays seasons tickets?  If not, why are you even commenting?  I'm telling you, we are taking a massive *loss* selling the tickets for the games we don't go to.  If we can even sell them at all.

I guess that?s about what I can expect from some of you guys. Nice.

That Urban dictionary link is harsher than I put it but, yeah, like I said I don't think anyone should buy season's tickets with the expectation of making profits and, if you're able to, I think it's pretty reasonable for other fans to see that as a bad thing. It's ticket scalping, even if resale markets have made that a legal enterprise.

I'm not a Blue Jays season ticket holder but when my father was(or more precisely when he and a friend each went in for half of a pair of season's seats) he went to about 20-25 games and gave away the rest to various friends, me, my siblings, etc. I think he saw the transaction as being about his money for baseball tickets. Full stop.

Estrada's ERA dropped to 4.66 after today's game.  He now has decent trade value.  Hopefully he continues pitching well.  Getting good prospects for him and Happ could be a silver lining on an otherwise lost season.

But the real question is, how much money can a ticket holder expect to profit from scalping games they cannot attend? Because I really feel for the people who cannot attend a game and subsequently are unable to make money from said game they cannot attend  ::)

Wow you guys are brutal.  How about just saying you hope I enjoy the game tomorrow?  No, you have to troll me instead.  Nice.  ::)

Yep, everyone is awful, everyone is a troll, everyone is part of a clique. But seriously, hopefully tomorrow's "total waste" of a day is good for you. Maybe you can re-sell some 10$ budweiser to other patrons for a profit. Fingers crossed!

Whatever dude. I hope you rot in hell along with your troll friends.

Wow. You realize you bring this on yourself, right?

If you're going to claim there is a hell, you're going to have to demonstrate it.
Because to my knowledge,  none of those stories have ever been proven.

Hoping someone rots in a  make-believe place, isn't very scary or convincing.

To try and move things away from whether or not there's a hell and who or what should rot in it I think there are two points here:

1) We're Leafs fans. Ticket scalping has made watching our favorite team much more difficult/expensive. I know that personally I was probably five years old at a game with my Dad at the Gardens when I asked about the guys selling tickets outside and was told they're jerks ripping people off. So it runs deep.

2) The people who scalp tickets for a living are bad enough but there are lots of Leafs season ticket holders who use the inflated resale market to subsidize their own seats. They're effectively exploiting their fellow fans for their own benefits.

So feelings run deep on this one. But in an effort to move away from personal animosity I do think it's important to say that I personally tend to be a real believer in the free market when it comes to tickets and ticket prices. If the demand for Jays tickets drops because the prices are too high or the quality of product drops then Rogers can choose to incentivize their purchase or raise the standard of play or drop prices.

But if demand is high they're likely to drop incentives or raise prices. That's the market. Will Rogers misread the market at times? Maybe but nobody should cry for them if they don't maximize ticket revenue.

On the flip side, fans shouldn't create a real incentive for management to feel like the team needs to be good constantly. We saw with the Leafs how bad that is in the long term. It means shortcuts and bad spending.

Attendance will rise and fall with the team's fortunes. It's the nature of the beast. Ticket buyers come back when the product improves. This is a good thing. It's why teams try to win. None of us are here because we want Rogers to make a lot of money.
