2018 Toronto Blue Jays General Season Thread

Andy said:
Not only that, but do any of us really know any facts in this case? I'm not sure why anyone can definitively say he deserves another chance when they don't even know what happened.

Exactly. None of us know what actually happened so there's really no rush to take a stance on Osuna's worthiness of a second chance.

It's not the first time Highlander has staked out that position re: Osuna. Like I said, I don't get it at all

The Jays lose 7-6 to the Astros Wednesday.  Starter Marco Estrada pitched well in allowing three runs on six innings of work, but the bullpen couldn't stem the offensive tide from the Astros bats.

Of course, aside from the above, the real story is Donaldson.  He has been diagnosed with a compounding strain aggravating his already strained calf.  He'll be out for a lengthy time.  Forget the word trade.  Donaldson will be lucky to even get some more playing time this season.  Later in the year perhaps.

The reality is that the Jays will most likely make him a one year qualifying offer and hope that a revamped Donaldson can emerge for next season,  in the hopes that the Jays, should they pursue it, can get something in return via trade.

More details on the Donaldson situation:

The Detroit Tigers venture into a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.

The Tigers,  who are third in the A.L.Central division 9.5 GBL Cleveland,  are also 15 GB for the second WC spot.

The Blue Jays, mired in fourth and 17 GBL NYYankees as well as 13 GB for the second WC spot, have apparently begun their house cleaning so to speak.  This week they traded outfielder Steve Pearce plus cash to Boston  in exchange for Santiago Espinal, a minor-leaguer.
The Jays' Josh Donaldson situation just got more complicated as JD suffered yet another injury setback while rehabbing.  Looks like there's no end in sight for Donaldson's injury-laden season.

Enough negatives.  Now for some positives.  The Jays come off winning one out of three in their most recent road series in Houston against the World Seried Champion Astros.  The Jays received some upbeat news in the pitching department as prospect Ryan Borucki pitched solidly in his Major League baseball d?but.  Also, the Jays starters pitched decently save for the bullpen which couldn't hold it's own against the Astros explosive offence.  Shoddy defence didn't help their cause.

The Jays have a chance to do some catching up in this Canada Day weekend series against a Detroit team that's presently on a nine game losing streak.

Atkins said today that he will be back with the Jays after his suspension. So he is getting the second chance.

The Stro Show is back!

Jays starter Marcus Stroman pitched a quality seven innings and looked very much like his old self again.  That is, taking down the side and varying his pitches with good control.  No one was more excited than the 'revitalized' Stroman:

?I?m back to being myself,? Stroman said. ?And I?m excited.?

He should be.  Got his first win of the year while Tyler Clippard closed out with the save, as the Blue Jays defeated the Tigers 3-2 Friday.

Game story:

Justin Smoak's walkoff home run in the ninth inning won it for the Jays, 4-3 over the Tigers, for their second straight home win.
Earlier in the fifth, Randall Grichuk smashed a two-run shot to tie the game up.  Then came Smoak's heroics.

Jays starter Sam Gaviglio pitched seven innings allowing three runs.  A good outing nonetheless for Gaviglio.  The win went to reliever Seunghwan Oh.

Can I honestly ask you something? Who are you posting these for? No one is coming here looking for a recap of a jays game 6 hours after the game is over.

I?m just honestly confused about the point of these recaps.

Just for the sake of posting a link to the game for those who may want to peruse some things here.

I understand the timing but since I posted the series details earlier, I feel it  needs to be filled with some latter details or comments (or short summary, link, etc.) to a game that's been played.  Even if it's done late.

I don't mean to offend anyone.  I just think it goes with the territory, so to speak.

I?m not offended. I was honestly asking because it didn?t make much sense to me.

The Blue Jays have an off-day.  Will recommence playing tomorrow versus the New York Mets.

Jays got pounded 9-1 Sunday, with starter J.A.Happ getting zinged for seven runs.  It was one of Happ's rare poor starts.

Looks like someone forgot it was a 4 game series with the Tigers.  :-[ ;)

For the record the Jays lost 3-2 in 10 innings today, so the series ended in a split.

Borucki got in trouble early, but bounced back and had a fine game with 8 strikeouts. Look for him to keep his spot in the rotation for the rest of this season.

Went to the game yesterday and only 37,000+ for Canada Day...rest of the series the attendance was under 30,000. The bandwagon fans have already tuned this team out in a big way and the ticket price increases haven't helped the diehards either.

The New York Mets (33-48) come to town to play a two-game Interleague set against the Toronto Blue Jays (39-45).

The Mets are mired in fourth in the N.L. East, much like their A.L. East counterparts the Blue Jays.  Both teams seem to be having an odentical year and both teams are seeking to offload some excess baggage, so to speak.

It's also interesting, if not coincidental,  that the Mets and Blue Jays both signed  prospects -- Francisco Alvarez (Venezuela) by New York, and Orelvis Martinez (Dominican Republic) by Toronto.

The Blue Jays came off a split of their recent Canada Day weekend series versus the Detroit Tigers.

This series will mark the return of ex Blue Jay icon Jose Bautista to the Rogers Centre, albeit in a Mets uniform.  What exactly is Jose thinking?

?We had a pretty good run there and I had a successful career in my years there. I did enjoy my time in Toronto greatly and it?s going to be great to be back.?

?I?m trying not to think about it. I?m just going to let it come and enjoy it when it gets here."

Blue Jay fans will never forget, Jose.  You are welcome.

LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!

The Blue Jays split their two-game set versus the Mets.  They prevailwd 8-6 in Tuesday's comeback win but lost 6-3 in Wednesday's final

Good to see Lourdes Gurriel Jr. have the kind of game he did in that 8-6 win Tueaday, his two-run homer in the ninth drove in the runs that put the Jays ahead in the game.

Gurriel had been recalled ftom Triple A prior to the series.

And of course, who could forget Jose?  An emotional Bautista acknowledged the crowd after receiving a standing ovation.  Memories never die.

The Blue Jays have an off-day today .  Will resume playing Friday versus the Yankees.

The New York Yankees (56-28) visit the Rogers Centre for a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays (40-46).

The Yankees, who are second in the A.L. East division just 1.0 GBL Boston, lead the Major Leagues in home runs -- 144 at last count.

The Blue Jays have a chance to do some showcasing for the purposes of trade potential & possibilities.  Saturday's matchup will pit two of each team's best starters -- the Yankees' Severino and the Jays' Happ -- and it sure will be interesting to see Happ hopefully at his best again.  Again?  Well, he got shelled for seven runs in his last outing against the Detroit Tigers.  It was a rare bad performance by the Blue Jays' otherwise most consistent pitcher.

Looking forward to the Jays battling the Bronx Bombers.

LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!

Listen, boys, I need some help here.

WTF happened to the Jays...like, it wasn't supposed to be this bad, right?

What's the solution here?

I don't think many people really expected them to be a playoff team. Not after the years that Boston and New York had(who both added major off-season pieces). Are they maybe a little behind where people had them pegged? A bit maybe, but Donaldson's been hurt, Sanchez has been hurt/ineffective, Stroman's been hurt/downright bad.

The solution is scrap and build.
