2018 Toronto Blue Jays General Season Thread

I am totally against all violence between men and women or women and men. However if it is a domestic incident then it will be treated much differently than if he had assaulted a stranger he just met.  I think the last guy got 30 games.
I hope the lad gets the treatment he so desperately needs and doesn't derail his life with these kind of incidents. With the talk of his depression last year he definitely needs some very good treatment.

You can sprain a hamstring?

Yes, one can.  A hamstring pull, strain, or tightness usually refers to a hamstring injury.  It's well known in the medical literature.

Granderson's has been described to as more of a tightness.

Nevermind

You are correct OTH.  I thought I had initially typed "strain" and did not check back thoroughly enough to notice the typo as "sprain".  (I'm probably the only one on earth still using a BlackBerry PlayBook & it's very faulty at times keyboard).  I honestly meant to type in "strain" not "sprain, which is why I was momentarily puzzled about your question.

My complete bad.  :)

I hope it also doesn't mean the Blue Jays' season will go down the drain on account of this.  They depend on him so much as a closer, let's face it, he's among the best in the league.

How this whole scenario plays out and how it will affect the Jays remains to be seen.

Congratulations to Canadian James Paxton on throwing a no-hitter at the Rogers Centre Tuesday night as the Seattle Mariners shut down the Blue Jays
5-0.

Mariners' starter Paxton, known as "The Big Maple", could not have chosen a better locale to throw his no-hitter, as he was cheered and given an ovation by the fans here in Toronto.

Paxton is only the second Canadian pitcher in MLB history to throw a no-hitter.  The first was Dickinson Fowler of the Philadelphia Athletic in 1945.

He was also drafted (and lost) by the Jays, and anointed by a bald eagle.

Re:  Osuna

Boy, what a mess.

MLB has never dealt with domestic violence incidence in-season.  Since most of the cases they dealt with were in the U.S. (U.S. law enforcement/court proceedings etc.), they have never had to deal with the Canadian justice system/law enforcement officials in Canada.

The Crown/attorney will handle the case and determine if there are reasonable grounds for a conviction, that is if there is even a case to proceed with.  But not before...

The Toronto police and the Crown attorney could take the entirely logical position that they are not an enforcement agency for Major League Baseball. They are under no obligation to provide the woman?s statement to MLB investigators.

Osuna has a court date on June 18 (to set a court trial date), which may take up to four months for a court trial to convene.

MLB can still impose or mete out whatever disciplinary actions it so deems fit.  They have done this before and there may no reason to not to believe that another is upcoming.

Leaked photo on Global News of Osuna in holding cell.  Police launch investigation into the leak.

V.P. of News content Ron Waksman defended the situation:

?There is a very deep cynicism in society today, and we hear it all the time and I?m sure you hear it, that celebrities, and sports figures, and the powerful get special treatment under the law,? Waksman told Cutrara.

?I think this picture makes it pretty clear that the suspect in this case was, at least on the surface, subject to exactly the same judicial process and circumstances as any ordinary citizen would be.?

More details:

A police source confirmed to Global News that the arrest happened in the 14 division and that it was a ?domestic related? incident.

The source said that police saw ?significant injuries? on the alleged victim, who provided a video statement to officers.

It was the concierge at the front desk of the residence who called police, the source added.

It's pretty devastating for the team to lose a player as good as Osuna. I feel bad for his girlfriend also. Apparently he gave her significant injuries.

The Boston Red Sox (26-11) come to town in a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays (20-18) here at the Rogers Centre.

The Jays, having lost two out of three to the Seattle Mariners in their most recent homestand, are currently third in the A.L. East 5.5 GBL New York Yankees.

Boston is in second place tied with the leading Yankees.  It wasn't too long ago earlier in the season when the Bosox looked like runaway leaders.  The tide has certainly changed.

The Blue Jays made some roster moves but not before having placed the struggling  Marcus Stroman on the 10 day DL (right shoulder fatigue).
Reliever Tim Mayza was optioned to the Triple A Buffalo Bisons while calling ip pitchers Joe Biagini & Sam Gaviglio.

The Blue Jays have won just four out of their last ten games.  They should get back on track against the Red Sox.

LET'GO BLUE JAYS!

Luke Mailles it in!

Well, how about that.  The BlueJays' Luke Maille hit a solo home run in the seventh inning that tied the game at 3-3.  Then, in the twelfth inning, Maille hit a walk-off two-run homer that wins it for the Blue Jays 5-3 over Chris Sale & the Red Sox.

Jays' starter Aaron Sanchez lasted a little over five innings in allowing three runs (two earned, the other on an error).  Reliever Sam Gaviglio, called up earlier from Triple A Buffalo Bisons, got his first win in the Major Leagues.

This wasn't one of Marco Estrada's better days.

The Jays' starter lasted six innings in giving up four runs and seven hits in a losing cause as the Blue Jays dropped a 5-2 decision to the Red Sox Saturday afternoon.

The Jays' bullpen has been the most overworked in the A.L., having logged in more innings than anyone else, thanks to the fact that Toronto's starters have not gone the distance but few times this year.

Estrada's outing yesterday was a case in point.

Russell Martin continues at third base for the Jays, a role not foreign to him.  Beats the catcher's job anytime:

?Catching, you?re always thinking and strategizing. At third base, you?re just being reactionary and playing the game.?

The Boston Red Sox take the series two out of three against the Blue Jays as the Red Sox took the rubber match 5-3 Sunday afternoon.

Jays' starter Joe Biagini allowed four runs on four hits and lasted all of four innings.  A frustrating day no doubt as Biagini's ERA ballooned to 7.98.  He has started in three games this year.

Here's some comparisons:

Coming into Sunday?s game, Biagini had a 3.44 ERA over 99.1 innings as a reliever, and a 5.97 ERA over 98 innings as a starter. Pitching out of the bullpen, his strikeout rate had been much higher and his home run rate much lower. And it?s not like Sunday?s outing made the discrepancy any less significant.

Having done a couple before, I have a great appreciation for the crazy amount of work and preparation that goes into pre-game and post-game summaries to making them interesting and accurate. Similarly, those play by play guys put a lot of effort into getting random stats and facts together so they can fill in the gaps or highlight a player.

So the Toronto Blue Jays (21-20) take on the New York Mets (19-18) at Citi Field here in Flushing, NY.

The Blue Jays, having come off on the losing end of a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox in Toronto, occupy third place in the A.L. East Division, 7.5 GBL New York Yankees.

The New York Mets, fourth in the N.L. East Division 4.0 GBL Arlanta Braves, just came off a split of their series with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Jays and the Mets feature former players who played for their respective teams, now opponents.  The Jays' Curtis Granderson and the Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who was once a Jays' prospect down on the farm.

Toronto made further roster moves by demoting Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to Teiple A Buffalo and calling up Pitcher Deck McGuire.  Pitcher Carlos Ramirez was DFA (Designated for Assignment).

LET'S GO BLJE JAYS!

I gotta say, I'm a little surprised they chose to DFA Ramirez. Not that he was an elite prospect or anything but he only started pitching/relieving in 2014 and had put up some gaudy numbers the last few years. A bit of a headscratcher imo.

Speaking of DFA though, Morales, the bell tolls for thee!
