2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

So ROR is eligible to come off LTIR for the game on Wednesday. Those 10 games/24 days went by quicker than I thought.

Doesn't mean he'll for sure be playing Wednesday but his return is definitely near.

He's been skating with the team lately, so, hopefully that's a sign that his return is nigh.

It's good timing, he comes back with either 8 or 9 games left to play, plenty of time to get some chemistry going, and be back in full game shape.

I trust the medical team to not rush him back but I hope they don't jump to put him in just because he is eligible.  I'd hate to see him take a slash and have a set back in a relatively meaningless game.

This one is really fun, especially the closer.

Tough L for Hockeyviz, but the model (and real results) was always going to hinge on goaltending. Leafs doing alright with Matthews largely at 2/3s capacity (Nylander, Marner, Tavares stepping up at times to fill the gap). Not having to score 5 goals per night also helps (but it would be nice).

6th worst 5-on-5 team save percentage last season, 6th best 5-on-5 team save percentage this season.

As I looked that up I also noticed: Vancouver was 1st and Calgary 4th in 5-on-5 team save percentage last season, and they're 29th and 31st right now.

I haven't been able to watch a lot of the games lately.  How has Schenn looked?  Read an article that said he was noticeably bad.  What is the opinion on him here?

If you like hits, he's great. He's essentially 2023 Polak.

Statistically, not great. Although there's one game against Carolina that really tilts those numbers in the wrong direction. I think for the most part he's played boring, low event minutes with minimal glaring mistakes.

I think this D setup is what Keefe is angling towards for the playoffs.
It's two pairs he can trust in match ups whose only offensive imperative is to break the puck out of the DZ past the first layer of forecheckers and bunt the puck back to the forwards in the OZ to shrink the ice into the OZ. Not much creativity required, definitely limit risky razzle dazzle. The third pair are the specialists (Off, Def) that need sheltering, but can also be sprinkled in with other pairings when chasing or locking down a lead.

This leaves Liljegren waiting in the wings, as a good two-way d-man who will be targeted physically otherwise.

Hmmm.  I can take that a couple of ways.  It could be that he is playing like Polak did with the Leafs back in the day, or he is playing like how Polak would play in 2023.

Either way is good IMO. Polak was a mean hard hitting D man that wasn't good with the puck. Schenn seems a lil more poised with the puck but he likes to hit like Polak and make people pay.

That's good then.  Boring low event is what the Leafs need.
