2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Schenn is getting a lot of flak but we should recognize that Coyle made a good play to keep it in and even then it was matter of a couple of inches.

That said, Luke did not have a particularly good game.

It was Carlo, who is 6'6, that kept it in and he only just reached it.

It?s not just this one game though. The advance stats say that he?s terrible and especially terrible at defense. The eye test kind of just confirms it. He?s slow, and he can?t make up that deficit by being strong.

Dubas is a proponent of advanced stats and he picked him up, so I don't think he's as bad as you claim.

My frustration is less with Schenn and more with the coaching staff believing he's a better option than Liljegren (he's not)

Yeah with that approach it's like they are playing to not make a mistake rather than believing they are a good enough team to overcome the mistake.

liljegren hasn't shown that he can be outmuscled at times, and isn't great at boxing out players. I think Dubas probably looked at Perry/Maroon/Paul, and wanted a 7th D option for situational play. The leafs really didn't have anyone that could clear a crease or be physically hard to play against, so I think that's why dubas paid a low price for a spot duty type that could bring it. Doesn't mean he'll always draw in, but if Tampa's 4th line or even netfront PP is giving the leafs D problems, he's an option.

He?s not better. But he is different. And sometimes you need different more than you need better.

Is different better, even tho that different is worse.

Will they sign Knies today?

Happy Easter my friend. I hope so. Going to be tough as far as fitting him in. Who gets bumped? 4th line has been playing great wouldn't change any of them. Hoping he gets a chance this week and see how he looks anyway.

Sabres have 12 more goals than we do (and have given up vastly more than us).  But still, I'm surprised.

Not sure if it was picked up elsewhere, but Dubas confirmed Murray is dealing with a concussion.

I feel bad for Murray.  I still would like him and his Cup pedigree available in the playoffs.

Dubas: There is a lot going on with the club, and I felt it is probably right for me to come out and explain the different processes we have gone through to get here and what has all transpired so everyone has a deeper understanding rather than make Sheldon [Keefe] continually come out and answer for it when it is largely my decision-making.

RE: Florida game roster decisions
with the competition and what it meant for the whole league ? we owed our best. That included playing Ilya in the game and giving him one more before he was tested and ready to go for playoffs.

We viewed the Florida game, because of what it meant for Florida, Pittsburgh, the Islanders, and Buffalo, we owed it our best lineup last night, including playing a couple of guys who are a little dinged up.

It is a tough one. If we did just what was best for our team, given our situation, we would?ve probably done differently. Sheldon and I had a lot of discussion about it. We just decided it would be best. If we were in the spot of those teams, that is what we would want, so that is what we did last night.

RE: Jett!
Why was the call made for Jett Alexander to get into that game on Saturday? Sheldon said he didn?t make the call.

Dubas: I wasn?t at the game. All I would say on Jett? I know there has been a lot of discussion about it. I don?t really care what other people think, frankly, and what people say about why he got in, or if we did it because this other team did it, or why we would do that.

The thing with Jett that people should know is that Jett Alexander has been around our program for a number of years as an ATO guy and an emergency guy. He donates a lot of his time to be there just in case. He goes out of his way to be there for practices for other teams and our team.

Makes Chris Wideman look like an even bigger jerk ...

Giving a guy (& U of T)  who has helped the team so much a 70 second thrill ...

Especially when it's something a number of teams have done in the final minutes of games that were well in-hand and/or essentially meaningless. It was a nice gesture on the Leafs' part, and he had to go and crap all over it because he sucks and only plays for teams that suck.

Toronto Sun: Lineup experiments over, Maple Leafs liking test results heading into the post-season

... experiments with a Maple Leafs roster that used an NHL-high 47 players heading into Thursday?s final regular-season game, are at an end.
...
The Leafs have used 27 forwards, 15 defencemen and five goalies so far, not counting ATO netminders Nick Chenard and Matt Onsuka, who were on the bench the past two games. San Jose and Chicago were second to the Leafs in most players used this year with 44 each as of Tuesday. The longest list, as compiled by NHL Stats, is 55 by the 1991-92 Boston Bruins in a shorter 80-game schedule.

Can't say Dubas didn't beat some bushes ...

As of Mar 31, Leafs were second worst behind Montreal in man games lost to injury with 532.
That was a significant factor in the higher number of players on the Leafs roster.
