2023-24 NHL Thread

He's got one more season after this one at his $5m AAV...and he's owed $6m real money next season.

Detroit is only a couple of points back of the Leafs with the Leafs with one game in hand...but DET has ROW of 31 vs. TOR 29.  DET moving ahead of TOR pushes the Leafs into a wilcard spot.

Even after a 7 game winning streak.

Parity.

In the Leafs defence, they have played rather poorly a lot and made several questionable roster moves.

He was on emergency recall according to CapFriendly

Because Carter Hart got clipped, I was intrigued about maybe pitching an extra goalie we had to help keep the price down on Scott Walker. (Not a very popular thought around here as I came to find out)
So something is happening and I do not see a transaction from the Phantoms yet.
Looks like a move to get cap space & add a goalie. I don't see anyone that capable from the Phantoms.
Smells like a trade about to go down.

Outside of bringing in a true starter (which, considering the unknowns around Hart's legal issues, is probably a good idea), I suspect they want to give Fedotov or Sandstrom a shot. And, if they were making a big move for a goalie, I suspect they'd be sending Petersen's salary the other way. It's possible they were just getting the waivers issue out of the way for a trade, but it's equally possible they're just giving themselves the potential flexibility in case they need it, but have nothing imminent (or even anything that will go through). They might not even be sending Petersen down. We've seen similar moves approaching the deadline in years past.

They called Sandstrum up.
I looked at him yesterday

Of qualified AHL goalies, he's 41st with 3.23 GAA  and 46th with 0.882 save% this year
Peterson was apparently playing very poorly so maybe they figured it couldn't get much worse.
More likely they opened up a few hundred thousand in cap space before the deadline.

27 yrs old, 3.62 GAA with .887 save%, in his NHL career
NHL games: 3W 16L 4 OTL - 3 wins in 23 NHL appearances
He's never played a playoff game in the NHL, AHL or ECHL

He's probably there to be a warm body to keep the Zamboni operator out of the game.

I have to believe Briere has something else in mind as they head towards the playoffs.
It remains to be seen whether he can make a deal.

I don?t mind OT. So I guess I?d prefer a result. I?d even accept a 10 minute OT or something. But I prefer a tie after OT to a shootout.
Or expand the 3 on 3 to 10 minutes and a tie represents a point each. No point for reaching overtime.

Season series against the Leafs wrapped up.

He has 6 G and 3 came in December when they played the Leafs three times that month.

Suggesting the Leafs trade for Johnson?

Then he?d never score again, except in practice

That was beautiful.

I loved the finish

They're so deked out, all he has to do is casually slide it in the goal as they helplessly look on
