Todays a good day for teams to make long term mistakes

Today's a good day to start undoing July 1. Yesterday would've been better.
Will Tre do it though? I think Kampf with a guys like Steeves and Gregor could be decent.

I'm not referring to Kampf. I think he'd be fine with wheels on his wings too.

We are right up against (over) the cap and 5.5M is tied up in actually being a negative on results (arguably the other 5.5M as well). Aside from defense injuries, we could come out ahead by simply spending a couple of picks to clear those contracts and play some Marlies.

I'm not spending picks to move those guys right now. Just waive Klingberg and Reaves. The cap savings vs. their replacements will allow the Leafs to carry a 21-man roster even once everyone is healthy. Move Klingberg at the deadline once most of his contract is paid for if/when the Leafs trade for Zadorov or Tanev.

If the team wants cheap and easily attainable outside help get Jesse Puljujarvi (who I've long said feels like would be a great fit beside Kampf in a checking role) and Ethan Bear (particularly if Liljegren is going to be out for considerably longer than just the minimum LTIR period) when they're cleared to play (which should be soon).

I wasn't suggesting Kampf is an issue. It's the 5.5M(3+75) you're referring to. Will Tre move those 2 glaring issues right now? In the off season I was hoping they'd go with some Marlies to fill out the roster. They need to bring in more speed and give some of those guys a chance. I wouldn't have even signed Gregor. I think they have guys on the Marlies that could do the same job.

The Leafs are a 41.95% xGF team with Klingberg on the ice.

They're a 35.58% xGF team with Reaves on the ice.

They're a 31.52% xGF team with Klingberg and Reaves on the ice together.

They're a 51.74% xGF team without either of those two on the ice.

There's a lot of dooming and glooming right now that is certainly warranted and I don't think this fixes all of the problems but simply not playing these two would go a long way to making the team better. Especially if the new 3rd line keeps playing the way they have.

I wouldn't move picks either. Like your suggestions of Puljujarvi and Bear but would also like to see Steeves, McMann, Abruzzese get a shot.

So in other words, they get owned with them on the ice? Funny thing, didn't need the stat to confirm the eye test here lol.

Yeah and to clarify I actually made a small error when looking at the numbers. Klingberg's xGF is actually 41.95% and Reaves 35.58%.

McMann, yes. I'd actually probably swap him with Gregor right now even if the team decides to stubbornly stick with Reaves for a little longer. Gregor's got speed and a shot but if the team has a balanced offensive top-9 forward set-up (which they currently finally do) then that 4th line needs things that I think McMann can provide more of.

Steeves and Abruzzese though, with all due respect to them, just feel like your average replacement level depth. Which granted yes would still be a dramatic improvement over Reaves but the Leafs could do better there.

I like them both but if they're getting stuffed on the 4th line, Steeves and Abruzzese will not be set up for success, and certainly not together at the same time. McMann has the body type to handle it.

Dubas stuffed the prospect pipeline with these overlooked, skilled skaters, but they're lottery tickets for top-9 filler. We don't have the cap space/depth or top-roster build to run a lightweight waterbug 4th line.

And Patrick Kane.

I've been open to Kane before and it'd be pretty funny to see the Leafs sign all 3 of the IR UFAs but the timing right now would be tricky. There's only room for one of him or Robertson in the top-9 and obviously Robertson's early results have been good.

That rumour is going around today as well.

No more using picks to compensate for dumbass GM moves.

Reaves can be waived.  But Klingberg?  Is he fixable?  Was he THIS bad defensively during his best offensive years?
