2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Great read, Herman, thank you.  The article made me revisit the Jack Eichel trade, which serves as the perfect justification and template for a potential Marner deal.  Yes, Eichel just won a Cup in Vegas, but the four quarters Buffalo got for the dollar are working out just fine, thank you.  Admittedly, there's guesswork in trying to project out younger players but, for me, I'm a big supporter of Herman's "Trade Marner" platform.

Can he still play? He's getting up there.

Played 73 games in a 4th line role last season. Should be able to do similar this year, even if it's part time. If he's signed for near league minimum, that's fine value.

I wasn't totally opposed to a face puncher before, think I brought up Lucic once or twice, but that was when I thought Kampf wasn't returning and he could be paired with a C that had a little better transition skills like a Lafferty or Holmberg. Now I'm not really sure I'd be as on board.

Reaves isn't the same old school face puncher, though. He's also actually a reasonable 4th line grinder. Also, his 7 fights last year were the most he'd had in a long while. As a 12th/13th forward type, he feels like a good potential fit.

That might have been the case a few years ago. At 36 and a half I'm not super sure that's the case anymore. We'll see how it all plays out. I highly doubt he signs somewhere for $1mil or less too which isn't ideal.

Based on the article above and what I've surmised from other insiders

Here's Dreger blowing smoke for Lewis Gross

Matthews:
[*] Wants to be a Leaf
[*] Wants to win with the Leafs
[*] Looking for a shorter term deal 3-5 years in the 12.5+ to 14M range, ostensibly to give the Leafs more room for depth
[*] Would entertain an 8-year but it would have to account for the escalating cap, so 16+, which is counter productive

Nylander:
[*] Wants to be a Leaf
[*] Wants to win with the Leafs
[*] Wants to be paid commensurate with his contributions: initial ask is $10M (scaling Tkachuk's deal 9.5x8 @ 11.52% to new cap levels)
[*] Leafs pushing for something starting with 8
[*] Ottawa, Detroit, Edmonton circling for a trade

My prediction:
Matthews: 13.4 x 5 years
Nylander: 9.288 x 8 years; if you drag it into mid-next season (cap space is gone around the league except on teams Nylander's NTC should be blocking), the price goes up

Current cap/roster situation (obviously lines are mostly just for show atm) as free agency is just over 24 hours away:

Jarnkrok-Matthews-Marner
Knies-Tavares-Nylander
_____-_____-Lafferty
Holmberg-Kampf-McMann

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Liljegren
Giordano-Timmins

Murray
Woll

LTIR: Muzzin

That roster, per CF, has a total cap hit of $71,897,283 leaving the Leafs with $11,602,717 in cap space.

Plugging Samsonov in at $3.5mil and going with 3 goalies brings the cap space down to $8.1mil. Waiving Murray and assigning him to the Marlies when possible bumps that up to $9.25mil. Trading him to a team that takes his full cap hit gives the Leafs just a shade under $12.8mil in cap space to play with.

Maybe worth reminding everyone that Knies and Holmberg are the only notable Leafs* who are exempt from waivers next season. Woll and McMann will require waivers in order to be sent to the Marlies.

* edit: can throw in Robertson and Steeves as well depending on how much you want to stretch the term notable.

Looks pretty good to me. Another $5-7M defenseman and Robertson in the mix and I think we're set up pretty well. Maybe Wheeler at C?

If we bring in a D at that cost there needs to be a money-out move going on as well. I'd rather a good chunk of the current cap space go to a forward or two.

I do not understand why they would keep Murray with Woll no longer waiver exempt unless he's going to reside on Robidas Island.
