2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

In regards to Samsonov, do we have any idea on what he's looking to get term/$ wise?

Nothing's come out about his contract negotiations except for the fact that they're happening basically. I'd be pretty surprised if his new AAV didn't start with a 3.

If we resign Nylander and Matthews the Leafs will likely have a down year 24/25 until JT is off the books (capped out). I am okay with that if we get to keep Matthews and Nylander.
Why would they have a down year? Next season when Matthews and Willy start their new deals, Brodie's 5M and Murray's 4.6M will be gone. They'll still be able to sign ROR Acciari, Sammy and Schenn this off season and  be ok.
I said 24/25 (not 23/24). I know the cap is projected to go up substantially that year (24/25) but so are these two contracts. Tavares final year of $11M against the cap will hurt.

I'd be willing to give him a little more to keep the term short. I'd really like to see if Woll is as good as he appeared at the end of the season/playoffs.

Is he not allowed to participate at the draft or is he just not allowed to be at the table? Meaning he can be called if need be? Kind of odd.

Can't be at the draft table, and can't particulate in draft meetings or something. Seems really dumb, how to they enforce any of it, besides being at the actual draft table.

I think the basic restriction is that he can't be involved in discussions related to amateur scouting due to the knowledge he possesses from Calgary's amateur scouting department. So he just can't be involved with the actual selection process. He can still be in Nashville and do the other parts of his job though (considering every GM and major agent is present there's still plenty for him to do).

It's a bit of a silly restriction, but not one without precedent. I remember when Peter Chiarelli left Ottawa to become Boston's GM way back when he was actually prevented from making any player related decisions whatsoever for the Bruins until after the draft and after the beginning of the free agency period. Coincidently enough Chara left the sens for Boston during that period. So while Chiarelli couldn't sign Chara himself I'm sure he told his staff who were in control that he'd love for them to sign a 6'9" defencemen if one just happened to be available.

That's what I'm referring to, when Matthews and Nylander start their new contracts. They're fine.

I'd be happy with that, but I suspect it'll be higher. He's similar in age and stats to Freddie Andersen when he got his $5Mx5 contract (though Andersen did have a bit more history).

Freddie's numbers at the time were much better (career .918 Sv% vs .908) and significantly more consistent (seasons ranged from .924 to .914 while Samsonov's range is .919 to .896). Freddie was also just acquired for a 1st and 2nd rounder while Samsonov was of course signed for free after not being qualified.

This isn't meant as a big knock on Samsonov, but I don't think there's much of a comparison there.

Trade scenarios ... herman is not going to like this.

They get right to the point:

Like Auston Matthews, Nylander has one year left on his contract. Unlike Matthews, he isn?t in the elite-of-the-elite tier of players where a team unequivocally can?t afford to lose him, nor does he play a premium position. That means there should be a cut-off point after which the club should move on.

The aftermath to Dubas's implosion has been underwhelming.

Management needs a complete overhaul. Absolutely amazing how stupid they all are. Shanahan and Keefe needed to go along with Dubas. More this team disappoints the more we stay the same. Core and coach both needed changes but good luck with that. Nothing will probably change with any of them and nothing will change come playoffs.

Considering they wanted to bring Dubas back too it can't be terribly surprising that they didn't want to make a bunch of changes.

They're not fans. They're not going to be sold on change for change's sake.

I have a cut off point at 10+M; technically closer to 9.5, but I'm okay overpaying a bit to get 8 years with Willy.

And before we relitigate the long drawn out contract negotiation prior, Dubas' first offer started with a 5.

I think my hard line would be 9, MAYBE 9.5. If he wants more he can be shopped to whoever wants him at $10.
