2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I think my hard line would be 9, MAYBE 9.5. If he wants more he can be shopped to whoever wants him at $10.

Yeah, Toronto has the 8 year advantage and he truly likes it here, so Toronto really should be able to make a case for a lower number (please be vain 8.88M x 8). In any case, the Willy negotiation is a cakewalk compared to Marner's.

lol this is so stupid.

I'd sit at the Flames table until they made their pick, talking up how good Mitch Marner is and how much he reminds me of a younger Johnny Gaudreau.

I'm really interested in reading your tell all book on the ways that Mitch Marner has wronged you in life.

There must be 50 Ways To Trade a Marner.

At this point Herman has done everything short of hit Marner with a folding chair once his back has turned.

I was thinking "Everything is not Mitchelly:  The untold biography of the Maple Leafs second best right winger"

I'd be happy with that, but I suspect it'll be higher. He's similar in age and stats to Freddie Andersen when he got his $5Mx5 contract (though Andersen did have a bit more history).

Freddie's numbers at the time were much better (career .918 Sv% vs .908) and significantly more consistent (seasons ranged from .924 to .914 while Samsonov's range is .919 to .896). Freddie was also just acquired for a 1st and 2nd rounder while Samsonov was of course signed for free after not being qualified.

This isn't meant as a big knock on Samsonov, but I don't think there's much of a comparison there.

For sure, but I'm just suggesting I think it'll be higher; I don't think for a second Samsonov will get the same contract. I won't be surprised if it's closer to $4M though.

Solid there.  Fully buryable.  I'm still not sold on how good he will be but he's good depth and should get NHL games

Would anyone flip Nylander for Karlsson at 50% straight up ?

Absolutely I would. They need to take some risk on if they want to get past that final hurdle.

Yup. He sure helped San Jose to.. hmm, not make the playoffs I guess?

Clearly he?s the missing piece.

Hopefully he can progress to be a credible 4C maybe sometime 3C.

At some point in order to win it all, I think you just have to make a substantial trade that probably most people won?t like at first sight. They probably won?t like the player you?re giving up to make it happen. They?ll probably bring up all the negatives instead of the positives of said player and how much he brings to the equation. But the alternative is to keep turning over the roster in small increments that don?t move the needle over the line or alter the chances of improvement enough. I?m not saying Karlsson is the answer, and I don?t think he?d fit under the cap anyways. But to see what both Vegas and Florida did to position themselves to get to the final is pretty inspiring, and the Leafs should take notice of what it took to get there.

I mean, I know you know that?s not a good metric to use, but, you know?

Only way I make that deal is if it?s clear Nylander isn?t going to sign an extension.

Yes you are right. I do know better, but I?m so broken that my effort level has tanked.
