2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Great news for Giordano. Obviously you never know with concussions and I'm sure he's far from cleared yet but I know some wondered if that was the last time we'd see him. This certainly signals to him returning still this season. That would of course eventually add a cap wrinkle too but not anything drastic.

Glad to see that.
He played pretty well last season.
The PK role this season seemed a bit much.
I still think he's smart and gives it his all. (look at how he got hurt)

Could they send Timmins down for some conditioning until after the deadline?

They'd have to put him on LTIR (retroactively, of course), for him not to count against the cap and the roster limit. Players on non-LTIR conditioning loans count against the cap and roster limits.

Since he hasn't been cleared for actual games, they might be able to get away with it, but, it's definitely no guarantee.

Yes, I kind of thought the same RE LTIR, but I'd think that given mono kicks the hell out of you they'd get away with it.

Well, this just might not be the year to buy at the deadline. Unless there?s a surprise player available, I just don?t really see anyone who is worth it. Maybe Wennberg or Larson but they are probably not be available.

You can probably get most players if you want them bad enough. You may have to overpay but you can get them.

This is what I?m most afraid of. Better to do nothing. There are still many good Matthews years to look forward to.

Rumors of sniffing around Colton Parayko are making me nauseous.  That has Patrick Marleau at triple the cost written all over it.

I just don?t trust Treliving not to do something just to be seen to have done something cos he?s new.

Is he really that bad/is the contract that bad?

Leafs are going to be rumoured to be sniffing around every defenceman who may or may not be on the market. I wouldn't put any stock in them at this point, especially since they don't seem to be coming from any actually reliable sources.

Parayko was elite a few seasons back, haven't really kept up with him but at 30 he's not over the hill.  6 more years does worry me though.

If you could get him with 2M retained? I'd be tempted. Robidas Island in 4 years if he falls that far.

His skating was never great and has been really exposed over the last couple seasons. Also, had a major back injury a couple years back that he never looked the same after. At major retention, cheap acquisition cost, and with the plan to use him lower in the lineup, maybe. If the thought is to use him against other team's top lines/with Rielly? Hard pass. Not that I think there's anything to these rumblings.

So you're saying there's a chance!

Treliving has typically not made big deals at the deadline. His typical deals are for middle/bottom 6 and depth types. I'm not so concerned he's going to go for a big swing here. In the off-season, though, that's where the concern comes into play.

I'd actually be more concerned if Dubas was still running the team, because he did try for a few of those, and that's why the team has barely any draft picks and a pretty shallow prospect pool.

If given full autonomy Kyle would've already blown our first on Erik Karlsson and would be swinging hard right now for his job. Doesn't mean Tre won't screw it up, but who knows. I feel like this team is such a conundrum as constructed.
