The Oilers are now entering, or have already been in the same territory.

Draisatl - 14M
McDavid - 12.5M (projected to be north of 15M on new salary)
Bouchard - Projected to be at 10M
Nurse - 9.25M (talk about an overpayment).

The bonus with them is they've actually been progressively getting better in the Playoffs and the cap is going up just as their contracts are coming due for renewal.

The Oilers have consistently gone up against poop competition in the playoffs, relative to our killer gauntlet of Stanley Cup champions. Except for CBJ/MTL, which was inexcusable. I am looking forward to the new coaching.

I agree with mtl, but Columbus was a weird year. Had the season gone the distance I?m not even sure they would have made the playoffs.

But it is crazy. Leafs first round opponents have gone to the finals 6 times I think, if we include the 2015 collapse against the bruins.

And say what you will about Montreal (and I still think that series loss is unforgivable) but they did go 8-0 against Montreal and Winnipeg.

Guenther has 50 points in 78 career games through his first 2 ELC seasons.

I suspect he?ll be worth that money in a couple seasons - and possibly a little more by the end - but that?s another big contract for a largely unproven young player.

I think Neely is going to regret that remark

I wonder if Swayman's ask of 8.5M AAV ask is on a shorter term.

Swayman has no contractual leverage, but also all the leverage, as Boston has no clear alternative. Unless they truly believe their vaunted defense is goaltender skill agnostic...

Makes sense for him to ask for a handsome number at a medium term (while the cap is climbing), and that would explain why Boston's front office is turning towards media tactics sway the public away from Swayman.

I thought the same thing...with the term ambiguous, it's a little hard to judge what's going on there.

Don't blame Swayman or any player for trying to max out. The notion that the B's take discounts was such a load.

Here?s his rumoured ask

They have a Marner too!
Tavares/Matthews/Nylander as well... if you're going to call out Marner you have to call out every Leaf who got top market rates.

Removing numbers completely, what does more damage to the roster and the team's chance of success?

Losing McAvoy for a good portion of the season or losing Swayman for a good chunk? I would say that losing your #1 goaltender would hurt more. Especially because the goaltending depth is low. (I still can't believe they traded Ullmark with no contract for Swayman).
