2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

2-years 850k AAV
I was looking at Myers' profile and was actually surprised to see that he was never drafted. For whatever reason I always had it in my head that he was like a former 1st rounder who just didn't pan out immediately.

But yeah, good deal. Nice to see them jump on this earlier than they did with Benoit's extension.

I've always been enamoured with Myers, but he never has been able to put what I thought was his big potential together. Here's hoping he scratches even a bit of that with the Leafs. Solid deal at such a price.

Myers feels a little like Martin Marincin to me. Not terrible and he's ok in the lineup for small doses but I don't really see him as a guy who will play 60+ games in a season.

10 of his 11 games this season he's been paired up with Rielly, which is obviously not exactly where you want him (although granted their results as a pairing have been great). I'll be very curious if he could replicate that kind of success on a 3rd pairing alongside OEL, which I think is where he eventually slots in.

Yep. Totally agree at this salary can’t argue too much but don’t see much difference in him, Benoit or Timmins. All meh.

Myers has been effective paired with Reilly. Timmins has been effective paired with OEL.

I'm starting to think this is the greatest area of need for the Leafs heading into the playoffs. I don't think you want both Myers and Timmins to be on your starting roster.

And I don’t think you want OEL in the top 4 or on the right side. OEL = #5 left D. I think OEL’s contract will be regretted in a couple of years if not already …

With the cap going up at the rate it's been speculated it could, his contract will be the going rate for #5 guys who's capable of filling a top 4 role in a pinch. It's already not far off from that, really - he has the 106th highest cap hit for D, and once you factor in guys on ELCs, he's basically being paid like pretty typical #4. By next season, he'll basically be earning low-end #4/high-end #5 money.

Rifai being sent back down... someone coming off IR?
I wonder if they needed to open that spot to claim Mermis. With everyone on the blueline healthy (other than Hakenpaa), they may have also felt it wasn't worth burning cap space to have him sit in the pressbox.

Now, if Holmberg's not healthy, they should use that spot to bring up someone that pushes Reaves back out of the lineup...

I'm going to argue against the effectiveness of Myers-Rielly as a pairing. Morgan Rielly is getting 7.5M. That's not crazy money for a defensemen but it puts him 25th in the league in defenseman cap hit. He has 0 points in his last 5 games and is a -2. I know xGF has been favourable to their pairing but Rielly is always going to be a flawed defensive player. He's paid to be a two-way guy who puts up points. I know that's not all time with Myers but he has 0 goals and 6 assists in his last 23 games It's been 29 games since his last goal and 33 games since his last even strength goal. Rielly is paid like a #1 defensemen (25th in defenseman cap hit). He needs to produce offense and that just isn't happening. He needs a defense partner that opens up his offensive game.

Simon Benoit is also a problem. His underlying numbers look a lot closer to the player he was two years ago in Anaheim than the guy who surprised us last year. He hasn't been good. It's not just his bad penalties but the Leafs just don't have the puck when he's on the ice and his inability to make good passes (coupled with a terribly inaccurate shot), he's just a possession black hole.

I have to give Treliving a lot of credit. He has taken the painfully flawed Dubasian architecture of the Leafs and made measurable improvements at the blue line and measurable improvements at the crease.

But with the grossly unbalanced architecture that permeates the roster without a single challenge for 8 years, you have to resort for bargain basement solutions for depth and that will never change until the architecture is materially changed.

I guess Myers will be the right shot defenseman Leafs will go into the playoffs with. I was more hoping for a Luke Schenn to augment our $7.5m D who has disappeared this season.
