2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

He hasn't done that for any of his other clients to my knowledge.
I just did a very superficial search, and other than that quote, I’m not finding anything from Ferris talking about Marner’s hurt feelings or anything at all really. Just a quote saying that negotiations should remain confidential

How has any of this changed? Marner's always been in full control here; he's far and away the best free agent available. He's going to ask for more money because his feelings got hurt? I'm 100% positive his agent has asked for him to be the highest paid player in the league. 100%.
This might be Marner's last shot with this group. He's trying to win.
He doesn't want upset or a media distraction circus from that effort - in this city especially. They got more than enough of that last summer - through no fault of his own. And yet, here we are.
His teammates saw their scoring leader's voice trembling as he faced the media for what Treliving served up last week.
Think that is going to go over well among his teammates? - which was exactly what Marner did not want to happen.
Marner still has complete control as he always would - it has nothing to do with that because there is nothing anyone can do to change that.
His agent already wanted him to test the UFA market. He's going to be even tougher to deal with after this.
Treliving gained nothing stirring up this mess. He hurt his own cause.

Ferris said all this literally the day after AM signed his previous contract. Regarding hurt feelings all you have to do is look at how many players have come out and said they don't understand why the market is after Mitch. This isn't all on Darren Ferris, it's the the direction you're led to when you have your finger on the pulse of everyone surrounding Mitch. Even the meeting with Berube last year for example. You obviously aren't going to get a direct quote from Mitch about how he really feels.

Man I really feel like this keeps getting blown out of proportion.

Asking a guy if he would waive his no trade clause being turned into this demonstrative issue seems absurd. If the Leafs wanted to push Marner out of town they could have easily treated him like other organizations have over the last few years. New York treated Trouba like crap. Vegas doesn't give a damn about any of their players if it can improve their roster. Hey maybe we could hold Matthews hostage and refuse him getting healthy like Buffalo did to Eichel.

Marner has the 12th highest cap hit in the NHL right now. Only 6 players have signed contracts for more money than Marner since he signed his extension in August 2019 (Matthews, MacKinnon, Petterson, Nylander, Pastrnak and Dahlin). All six of those contracts were signed knowing the cap was about to start trending upward again. This stupid notion that the Leafs organization has been disrespecting Marner is absurd. If Marner wanted stuff to go away he could negotiate a contract now. He didn't/doesn't want to do that. It's his contractual right to veto any trade discussions and he's not obligated to sign an extension but Treliving isn't doing his job if he doesn't look for ways to improve the team and if Carolina or any other team proposes a reasonable deal he should explore it.

And I'll go back to it, but where are the leaks coming from. This organization doesn't let stuff get out and they haven't for a long time...so are you accusing them of intentionally leaking Marner stuff to make him look bad that's the only way that goes onto Treliving/the front office over this Rantanen thing.

Ferris after walking back the low-ball comments during the last negotiation:

"We've continued throughout the year to have some constructive discussions, not negotiating, about the marketplace," said Ferris. "Even though you're not negotiating a contract at that point, we're going to have some playful banter, we're going to have a little bit of back and fourth and a poke here and there.

"It's not like we shook hands, see you later and we'll talk at the end of the year. That's not what happens and I think it gets taken out of context. Things are going in the right direction and we're not far off. Again, the market will dictate the market at that time and I'm sure there will be continued banter back and forth between us and them."

Ferris will spin whatever narrative he wants. This is all posturing, end of story.

I’m genuinely asking, but when has Marner actually came out and said he was slighted? Or complained?

I’m asking because I’ve never heard him actually say anything in that manner, just articles, or tweets or insiders.

I’m not saying it’s not true, I just personally have not seen him actually say anything in that manner.
He's not going to say anything like that because it snowballs the media circus.
There were multiple media reports of emotion in his voice - quivering or trembling. He was upset.
He did his best to stick to the script.

The Leafs will have to beat one of Tampa or Florida to make it through the east.
Probably will need to beat both. Unless Florida really sh!ts the bed with their injuries and 20 game bans, and Leafs place first.

3 games against Florida coming up..... which may determine it.
