2024 Draft Discussion

You're right herman, thanks for the clarification.

There are too many guys doing this stuff lol

This guy too:

It?s really hard to evaluate solely by NHLe and size/position comparables. Especially defensive defensemen.

I barely know any of these prospects except from the occasional media or hockey chatter or the odd game. So my opinion has to be very limited.

Barry Trotz was quoted as directing his staff (paraphrased) "Pick guys who have some sort of a chance to be top 6/top 4. I'll take care of the bottom half of the line up." In other words, take some chances. Maybe the Leafs did some of that here. They seemed to last year with Cowan as I recall.

From what I've seen and heard since the pick, Ben Danford, seems to have a respectable shot at cracking a top 4. He's right handed - which is a plus. Very few picks, including Danford, ever come with a 100% guarantee.

The Leafs might be looking at this a little differently than the bottom feeder teams. They have the deep pockets and world class resources for the development of these kids. Maybe they feel they can take prospects who are little more raw/less developed in certain areas because they're more confident they can bring them along with all their resources.

The top 16 ranked of the draft went in the first 20 picks (roughly). After that, the picks started to scatter. Someone claimed between there and #70 or more, there wasn't a lot between them.
With that in mind, if that is true (and it already seems to be from the picks taken so far), I really like them trading down from #23 to #31 & #58.

The Leafs focus has to be on the Matthews window of the next 4 years. It is doubtful a raw dman can make much of an impact at the NHL level within 4 years. But he's an asset they might flip to get them some help.

I PVR?d this so I can ff the junk and now I know what you are referring to.

This is lmfao funny?the guy yelling is funny too. He must be 1 foot away from a mic.

Well done Zee.

It was so obvious the guy was 3 sheets to the wind. The way he was screaming, Thornton almost started laughing when he went up to announce the pick. One of the highlights of the night

Based on what I?ve read, Danford seems to have 2nd pairing upside - which, considering where the Leafs? pick was and where the pick they traded for was, is pretty good value. Getting an extra pick while getting a player of equivalent value for where they were slotted is a tidy piece of work.

Leafs dealt their 2nd rounder (acquired when they traded down last night) for a 2025 2nd rounder. Get the logic there. We didn't have a pick in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round in 2025 prior to this. Would have liked more than just the final pick of the entire draft to make that swap though. Ah well.

Linus Eriksson (C) drafted with our 2nd pick.

Leafs traded the pick immediately before it was due, so it was actually Florida who took him:

It's starting to dawn on me that the Leafs might be a hot mess.
Danforth is a good pick, maybe very good, his coach says he plays like Tanev but with more upside offensively

Junior coaches will always talk up their guys.

I'd like to know how many players in the NHL were never drafted. I am talking about now, not historically

137 total undrafted players played a game this past season. 67 played over half the season.
