2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion | Official: Sundin & Chayka to lead front office

Is it likely an overpay....yes. Will it age poorly....yes. Is a big shot RHD a critical addition to this roster if the team is trying to compete....yes.

....
Meanwhile, Dreger said last month he doesn’t think Raddysh is coming to Toronto, but now reports the sign and trade is for a late round pick

That would be great if it is just for a "late round pick"

AFP Analytics had him at $8M/yr x 6 years
That is a lot for 2 good years and one great year greatly assisted by the talent on his team.

But if they're going for the playoffs for Matthews, getting Raddysh helps significantly.

Matthews & Nylander wanted puck movers:

McCabe Raddysh
Rielly Tanev
OEL Carlo
Andrae Villeneuve

The importance of getting this done now is it will help them sign UFAs.
They have a better story to tell:
Their D is improved.
Their goaltending is enhanced with Akhtyamov in the wings and Hildeby providing a capable, healthy platoon
They're about to add the #1 pick overall
They've changed the coach to one willing to adjust the system
Calder Cup finalist depth

They need a couple of centers

An 8.5M cap hit today is equivalent to a 2023/24 cap hit of 6.8M (the last of the stagnant cap era), which is approximately like the 8-yr deal CBJ signed Damon Severson to in 2023 (8 x 6.25M) when he was 29

Yeah, I really feel Boone Jenner is incoming.

It feels like the Leafs are building a team that spends less time in it's own end and more time in the oppositions end. I like that the group appears to have a plan, and are trying to put that plan together. I do fear that if that is in fact their style of play, they will still have a tough time against teams that forecheck heavily, like Florida or Carolina. However, we never did see what a puck possession team with a good defence and good goaltending was capable of achieving.

That is where puck retrievals and zone exits from the back end are going to be crucial.

Knies (7.75M) - Matthews (13.25M) - Nylander (11.5M)
Cowan (900K) - Tavares (4.39M) - McKenna (975K)
Joshua (3.25M) - Groulx (812K) - ???
Lorentz (1.35M) - ??? - ???
??? - ???

Rielly (7.50M) - Raddysh (8.50M)
McCabe (4.51M) - Tanev (4.50M)
OEL (3.50M) - Carlo (3.49M)
Myers (850K)

Stolarz (3.75M)
Hildeby (841K)

Under contract: Luke Haymes (938K), Micahel Pezzettta (813K), Dakota Memis (812K), Ben Danford (936K), Marshall Rifai (850K), Artur Akhtyamov (900K)

RFA: Nick Robertson, Ryan Tverberg, Jacob Quillan, Matias Maccelli, William Villeneuve, Emil Andrae, Samuel Ersson
UFA: Travis Boyd, Vinni Lettieri, Calle Jarnkrok, Matt Benning, Troy Stecher
LTIR: Domi (3.75M)

Emil Andrae seems like an obvious signing unless the team really just wanted to unload Benoit and Woll and was content with the 3rd. His QO is 874K so maybe just put him at 1M

Robertson's QO is 1.825M...personally I'd like to keep him. I think he's shown improvements on both sides of the ice. I think he's a guy who actually has shown a willingness to push through stuff and I wonder if the new management would maybe appreciate what he provides a bit more. Depth scoring is important and I think Robertson used in the right way could be far more valuable. He won't sign for the QO, 3+ I'm assuming.

Maccelli's QO is 4.110M....obviously not at his QO. I'm not against bringing him back but I think I'd be looking for more physicality in his spot in the lineup.

Quillan (826K), Tverberg (813K). I like the idea of both players. Cheap. Infuse more "youth" into the lineup but obviously if a bigger fish showed up I don't care if we don't have either player.

The Leafs will probably still have around 10M in cap space with a bare minimum roster at this pointg.

I already forgot about Maccelli.

Both him and Robertson have arbitration rights.

I feel like I’d bring one of Robertson or Maccelli back. And I probably lean Robertson just cos he was drafted by the Leafs
