With the leaks being plugged such as they are I find it hard to take Dregger seriously. Not that I ever really did.

It really all depends what Carlo goes for obviously. I didn't think it was possible for Chicago to trade the 4th for Bowen freaking Byram so I'm not going to judge a trade before it happens. I think Carlo has value and I'm totally open to moving him to recoup anything close to what we gave up for him.

All he can do now is make inferences based on what other more freely informing team sources say regarding Leafs players.
I have the same concern about Rielly
I think Philly's 7th dman might be a replacement for Benoit but would be hard pressed to be a top 4.

Someone linked me to Howard Berger's post too saying his "sources" say a California team is offering two firsts for Matthews. I don't know what sources Howard Berger has given he works as a funeral director now, but whatever.

Rielly is bad and being traded out west for whatever (not likely a top 4 dman coming back)
Carlo is bad and being traded for a couple of mid round picks
Benoit was bad and traded

I'm hearing it debated as a mid round pick for Rielly and two for Carlo
You can't flip those into decent dmen

(right handed we don't need in top 4 unless Tanev is done)
Carlsson (right handed) is rumored to be signing in TBay for $10M/yr x 2 yrs
Andersson (right handed) rumored to be signing in Vegas for $8M/yr
Trouba (right handed) is looking at $8M/yr
after that, it is slimmer pickings:
Logan Stanley lefty top 5/6 projected to cost $3M/yr x 2
Ryan Shea lefty maybe top 4 that would cost $4M x 4
No assurance they would sign with the Leafs
There are others older or not so attractive/good
Rielly-Carlo as a 5/6 is probably better than anything they can find or get
They don't have a lot of assets for trades
They're expensive based on their performance under Berube but could improve with a new system/coach
I'd want to check that out before throwing them away because they're so hard to replace

I really have no attachment to any of these players. All of this is crazy talk in a vacuum where we don't know anything. If the Leafs trade Rielly and there is no plan to upgrade the d corps then we have a problem. But the fact is we know very little right now and just because we don't have all the information and don't have a finished roster assembled right now doesn't mean talk of trading players is crazy.

Who is going to play on Raddysh's left side and Tanev's left side?
OEL is turning 35 - he should be a 5/6 to get a full season out of him but maybe Andrae is that on the left side now
OEL and Raddysh are offensive dmen so they're not likely a great pairing

Obviously Rielly has been talked about for the last few years so I'm not going to deny the reality that a trade is probably going to happen. I fall on the "I'm not sure that trading him with the Berube stink is the best idea". 7.5M isn't necessarily the best cap number but unless the trade is an overpay...I'm leery that we will get a negative return kind of trade that just creates cap space in an environment where we don't need cap space.
I think the McCabe stuff is nonsense. I think Dreger has been pretty consistently shut out of Toronto rumours for a while. He had Nonis for years and there were definitely some leaks the last couple of years trickling out but when Hiller signs out of nowhere, we trade Woll out of nowhere, and Raddysh gets signed/traded without first seeing smoke....suddenly the Leafs are just leaking all over the place....sure.......
I think it's pretty clear that the Leafs need to improve their lineup via trade because the free agent market sucks. It's logical that we would be looking to make more deals especially with a new management team who won't have personal attachment to players.......but "rumblings" is just code word for "I'm trying to be relevant without actually having anything".

UFA Liljegren just signed in Washington for $3.2M x 2 yrs after a meh season 27pts -7
He was 4th in dman ice time with San Jose and 7th in Washington (who re-signed him)
Carlo's cap hit is $3.485M for this upcoming year (due to some salary retention with the Bruins)
Carlo was a #5 dman in ice time, +4 in both his seasons with the Leafs
There is a real risk they will not improve on that price performance dumping him for a couple of picks
