4 Pittsburgh Penguins vs 5 Philadelphia Flyers

He isn't that good.  Two of the last 3 seasons his even strength SV% was below league average, and the last season it was merely average (his ESV% this season was worse than Reimer's).  The year they won the Cup he put up much better playoff goaltending than he did in the regular season.  Other than that, he's been nothing special.

Yeah. He's a fairly average (occasionally slightly above average) starting goalie, and really always had been. His one truly excellent playoff run was actually the year Pittsburgh lost to Detroit - the year they won, he was merely good enough (.908 Sv% - he wasn't exactly stealing a bunch of games for them). It wouldn't surprise me to see the Pens try to improve their goaltending in the summer and shop Fleury.

Crosby came across as awfully childish in his post game interview today.

I thought he was more childish on the ice when just a few weeks ago he said he needs to stay away from the after the whistle stuff. He was involved in every single scrum and in most cases even instigated it.

I'm probably in the minority but I have always thought Fleury is massively overrated.

I don't know about that. He's never won an individual trophy, never been nominated for one, only ever been in one all-star game...I think the general perception of him is that he's not great.

As poorly as the Pens have played, Fleury has not inspred even ths slightest confidence for them... kinda  like beer league hockey. Its nice to win, but you really dont expect much

I hate the Flyers.  HATE them.  But I hope they sweep.  That could put some Pens in play on the trade front.  This will be hard for the mgmt to take standing pat.

And Pens haven't played THAT badly, but haven't got a save.  They've been scoring enough to win most games, it's not like the Flyers have been great defensively either.

I feel like the series changed when the Flyers came back and started scoring at will in the 1st game.  I think the series turned into a little bit of a run and gun fest because they started seeing that their skilled players stepped up their game by playing over the top whereas Pittsburgh just self-implodes.  I would imagine that they play a much more reserved style in the next round (especially if seeds 1/2 advance and they play Boston/New York).

I have never seen Crosby so rattled.  The Flyers are absolutely in the Penguins head right now.  If there is one team you'd think could reel off four straight wins to come back and win a series, the Pens would be at the top of the list.  But needing to win two back in Philly?  Almost no chance.  That place is intimidating.

He hasn't really had to this series, nor really has this year, but I get the sense that if Bryzgalov can turn it up and play like he is capable of, this may be Philly's year.

That's funny, because I get the exact opposite feeling. If the Flyers face a team that can play defence and has decent goaltending in the next round, I think they're done because Bryzgalov won't be able to hack it.

Bryzgalov is nothing short of of ordinary.  Yes, he did make that spectacular save in Game 2 in Pittsburgh off Letang with a gaping net, but, between Fleury and Bryzgalov, Fleury has been worse.

Truth is, that Pittsburgh doesn't have a decent back-up to Fleury, which is why the Pens will be shopping for a back-up netminder in the off-season.

In order for Pittsburgh to even have a hope of coming back, Malkin & Crosby need to step up, Fleury needs to elevate his game, and the entire Penguins team needs to get disciplined.  That'll be enough to match Philadelphia.

Maybe I'm wrong but on the surface, Philly is giving me hope for the Leafs. I mean, did they have a string of 3,4 years of being the very worst team in the league as the Pens did? Again, I haven't looked in depth (or at all really) at how they've assembled this team but on the surface, it looks like it's been by in large by shrude trading and drafting. God, I'd love to just once in 10-12 years strike gold on a player like Giroux.

Yes, the Flyers organization has assembled, I must admit, a well-built team.  As you mentioned, shrewd trading & drafting -- Schenn, Jagr, Giroux, Couturier, to name a few, plus the usual workhorses such as Hartnell, Briere, etc.

What impressed me most about this Flyers team, (even though I'd be loathe to praise them in any way), is the 'guts' or gamble (if one wants to call it that) of Philly GM Paul Holmgren, for example, in letting go/trading away Richards and Carter, and some other players (?),etc., signing Jagr, taking a chance on Bryzgalov, etcetera, etcetera.

Yes, Holmgren's moves have worked out lately for sure.... except as always the goaltender is the final question mark.  I love Bryzgalov as a personality, but does he have what it takes to go all the way?  Very questionable.
