Armchair GM Thread 2022-2023

Revised back of the napkin lineup

Assuming a Kerfoot trade, I think we're at something like this:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Nylander-Tavares-Jarnkrok
Engvall-Kampf-NAK
Robertson-Gaudette-Malgin
Simmonds

I'd like to see Kampf at 4C, but I really don't think there's been any indication from either the team or media folks that that's under consideration at all so until we hear otherwise I'm going to assume he's sticking at 3C at least to start. This group essentially keeps the top line in tact, swaps Kerfoot for Jarnkrok, keeps some form of the Kampf checking line in tact, and then replaces a mostly useless 4th line with one that could potentially actually produce offence on a relatively consistent basis.

I think the 2-3-4 RWers are somewhat interchangeable. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see NAK at least get a shot on the 2nd line at some point to see if he could have a mini-Bunting type of impact with Tavares+Nylander. I'm not really holding my breathe that he'll be a consistent part of that line but we'll probably see get him spurts of action there from time to time. Jarnkrok should easily be able to swap from the 2nd line to a checking 3rd line with a little more ease than Kerfoot could. Malgin's gonna surprise people this season, that's my big hot take.

This roster leaves about $1.9mil with Sandin still to sign. Adding another bargain bin option like Heinen/Milano/Rodrigues would mean 1) they'd need to sign for maximum $1mil and Simmonds would likely need to be waived, 2) the team would need to go with 12 forwards only, or 3) Holl would need to get dealt and replaced with Benn at the 7D.

Exactly. If the rumoured asking price of 2.5 million is indeed what Sandin is asking for, I'm not sure that. we see him at training camp. Not with a contract anyways.

I think Sandin's agent is being ultra-aggressive with his contract demands because he thinks a higher cap hit could give Sandin some protection against being stuck in the press box and I think the Leafs are holding off on making a cap clearing move until they're more confident they can get Sandin signed to terms that they find reasonable.

If Lewis Gross tries to play the same holdout game that he did with Nylander I think the Leafs should give him a firm deadline.  Tell him he has to be signed by training camp or prepare for the 2023 season.  Will benefit nobody if Sandin holds out until Dec 1st

That's a ridiculous proposition. Benefits nobody to be a complete dick to Sandin and lose out on a year of development of one of your top young players.

Alex Romanov 3 years 2.5M AAV | 133GP 4G 15A - played top 4 on the Canadiens, was okish
Rasmus Sandin - ??? | 88GP 6G 22A - crushed bottom pair minutes
Timoth Liljegren 2 years 1.4M AAV | 74GP 5G 19A - crushed bottom pair minutes

Evolving-Hockey projects 2 years 1.6M AAV for Sandin (Liljegren's projection was 1.25M AAV for 2 years, btw). Friedman noted on his podcast that Sandin's group is looking at Adam Boqvist as a comparable

Adam Boqvist 3 years 2.6M AAV | 128GP 17G 34A)

The cap hit margins here are nearly negligible. I think Carlton is correct in that this contract is coming down to making a tangible assurance for legitimate playing time and that requires some space to work with, which needs the market to wake up first.

Sandin is looking up at Rielly, Muzzin, Giordano and sort of has to pray for injury/oldness. There is apparently no appetite for trading Muzzin, who was very good when properly healthy and playing next to Brodie and is easily the hardest Leaf to face; Rielly just got super extended at a sweetheart deal and brings something unique to the table; and Giordano is still a very effective player on a hilariously cheap deal who plays the way we hope Sandin can develop into. Dubas already moved Dermott, who was an early draft version of Sandin.

Question: Do you want Jason Robertson?

Follow-up: What would you send out to get him? Obviously we'll need to make 8M in space as well so bye Kerfoot/Holl anyway

1) 4 1sts level offer sheet
2) a package around Knies and Sandin
3) Something else

I still want him. ZAR-Kampf-NAK would be a heck of a 4th line.

Oilers will sign him to a 5x5 contract next year and Jim Matheson will write a piece on how he's the final missing piece they've been searching for.

I know this is straight up garbage but I had to share because this genuinely made me laugh out loud.

I don?t know why it says doesn?t exist. The link works.

You have to clear out the tracing tag in the url (everything from the ? and on) after pasting

If Samsonov is going to be out long term (assuming we won't know more until his MRI although you have to hope that finishing the period is a good sign that it isn't a horrible knee injury) AND Murray is completely unreliable the Leafs likely have to acquire a goalie.  I'd be knocking on San Jose's door for Reimer to come back long before Campbell.

Where is this nonsense about Campbell being a slow starter coming from?

.918 SV% last year in October
.955 SV% in November

He had great numbers the year before.

What a dumb article.
