This year in Norfolk (AHL)

Name       Pos GP G A PTS +/- PIM PPG SHG Pt/G PIMPG SOG
Carter Ashton RW 56 19 16 35 +8 58 5 0 0.62 1.04   126

Should also point out this is his first pro season.

... and as Crawford pointed out, 20 goals in the AHL is very difficult to do.

I have some concerns about Aulie's ability to be the kind of shutdown guy that his size should allow him.  I think he has a bit of the Komisarek/Phaneuf disease of just being a little too slow/not mobile enough to be absolutely effective, but if he finds a way to cheat a bit and anticipate the forward, he can wrap them up with his reach quite effectively.

Carter Ashton.  I like the addition.  A guy with size and a guy who maybe will be able to develop a decent scoring ability but at the time, I think we need to sit on him and wait.  He has 20 goals and 36 points in 67 career AHL games.  It's not awful, but he's a year or two away from being a guy who might produce in the NHL.

From McKeen's, 2010:

Carter Ashton (TB), RW, Regina
The definition of power forward .. uses an unsuspecting, yet heavy wristshot, allowing him to score from outside of the paint .. hurt another player with his powerful slapshot .. can get his feet moving for his size .. ability to fight through checks and players bounce off him .. can handle a hard pass as he cuts through the neutral zone .. uses his long reach to make unthinkable plays .. will staple players to the boards, but should do this more often .. tendency to bring the puck off the wall, make a few elusive moves and release a shot .. could be more dominating at times, especially with his frame and skill set.

Just heard this on the radio on the way back in. Wasn't sure what to think because I am not all that well versed in the prospects of too many teams, but from what I have read and heard so far, this sounds like a decent deal for the Leafs.

If you can't afford Nash, get the next Nash.  I guess.

Frankly, for a team as bad defensively as we are, dealing a good defensive prospect seems weird to me.  Especially a rugged guy like Aulie.  He was the best d-man in the deal from CGY.  * runs away *

The flip side, is I really hope Burke is working his butt off to find a team dumb enough to take Komisarek at this point.  Offer up a pick with him and see if a silly team desperate for a defenseman bites.  Take a salary back if you have to.  Try and find a way to make a roster spot for Holzer to audition.

"#Leafs now have 7 first-round picks from the past 4 drafts: Schenn, Colborne, Gardiner (2008), Kadri, Ashton (2009), Biggs, Percy (2011)."

Don't know lots about him.

I can't help but feel underwhelmed. Not by the return but the fact that the season is on the line and Burke trades a depth defenseman for a depth forward.

Some tampa fans are not happy with this trade so it must be good for us ;)

Nice to see another big bodied forward in our system.
Best of luck to KA, hope he enjoys the sun and no taxes.

I hear ya...but it is certainly more palatable than a 2nd for Yanic Perreault...

Burke is thinking long-term, something he's been pretty clear about for a while now.

I think it means his eye is clearly still on the long term, moving assets from a position well covered to one that is lacking down the road, staying very young and not mortgaging.

Sucks as a fan in the short term but better this way than panic and short sighted silliness.
