Aulie to TBay for Carter Ashton

Well, Aulie will have a solid shot at making the TB defense squad to stick, I imagine he would rather make nhl money in TB than mainly play on the Marlies. Good luck to him. I haven't seen Ashton but I guess it's another guy that may give some truculence on the 3rd/4th lines in the future.

Ashton has more upside than that.

Aulie will stick because TB's defense is atrocious and their better d-men are injured.  He's probably a #4 for sure.

And as said, Ashton has much higher upside than that.

So.... Can Ashton play net?

Yeah, I don't mind the Ashton/Aulie deal, but I was hoping to see Gustavsson swapped out for a real goalie.

The price was too high and the options too limited for the Leafs to make a move for a goaltender.

Probably, although I would have even been happy with Bishop for a second-rounder, but I won't bother getting into that in this thread.

God I hope so. I liked Aulie.

I've heard non-Leafs management/coaches speak very well of Holzer.
Yup, me to. Most people say he's ready now.

I don't have a huge problem with this deal but I'll say again: our defense is our weakest link, and Aulie looked pretty good in his callups.  So they'd better be right on Holzer and Blacker.

I don't know what games you've been watching but he was one of the worst defensemen in training camp this year and has been average at best, terrible at worst for the Marlies this year. Looking at the stats that PPP posted some time ago actually proved that Aulie dragged down Phaneuf to some extent when paired with him.

We've got Blacker, Holzer in the A and Percy in the O. He was very far down on the depth chart. Ashton on the other hand was rated as TB's top prospect in the Hockey News in November (or whatever it was).

You can criticize the deal all you want, but according to pretty much EVERYBODY involved, this was a good deal for both teams with the Leafs getting the prospect that has better upside. Nevermind the fact that this move addresses organizational need.

To put that into perspective though, Bishop is 25. He's not exactly a fresh face, although goaltenders do take longer to develop. He's having a breakout season in the A, but we've got a guy in Owuya who's putting up similar numbers who's 3 years younger. As it stands I think Bishop is overhyped.

Organizational need?  The need of the organization I've been watching is for a defenseman who can actually play defense. Aulie is a big guy who has the tools and size to play the kind of game we need on the back end.

Maybe Holzer can too and maybe Blacker can. I'm just saying bb better be right on this.

Eakins too...

Here's a decent synopsis of the trade today.

Guy Boucher said of Ashton following a preseason game in September:

?Carter Ashton was one of our guys doing a great job in front of the net. He?s a very, very hardworking kid with an amazing attitude, I really enjoyed him. Everything we wanted to teach he wanted to do, and he wanted to do more, and I thought he did very good in the games.. a big boy too that can skate, not a lot of those guys around, they?re rare. He?s a real power forward. We use that word very often with guys that don?t really deserve that name but in this case he?s the real deal and he?s going to be a good player.?

I do like the sounds of that.
