Auston Matthews

Significantly Insignificant said:
Given your druthers, would you rather have Matthews score 60 - 70 goals but end up with less than 100 points, or would you rather have him score around 40 goals but end up over 100 points?

Whatever produces a higher 5-on-5 primary points per 60 minutes rate.

I love how in a week Matthews has had tweets comparing his accomplishments to both Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. Bueno.

Holy moly. I guess he missed a bunch of games with injury but man that's a streak

He's now up to 146 points in 150 regular season games. 84 goals.

Solid start to the career.

Pfft.  Lars Eller says he's seeing nothing special.

It's hard to bring this up without seeming trollish, but Matthews is really got some growing up to do in working with the media.

I wasn't bothered so much by the other night with the "yes I have" regarding the question on the puck following him around, although it didn't impress me much either. However the mid-game interview with Mark Masters(?) I think in Detroit was really poor. I expect noone likes doing them, but he came across like a spoiled teenager. I'm sure a lot of folks will find a way to think it amusing while he's filling the net, but I have a feeling he'll be getting a lecture soon from somewhere, I least I hope soon, anyway.

Do we have a link to this interview?

Not sure why the "Yeah I have" comment would be of any significance really. He's admitting that sometimes the puck always ends up on his stick.  :-\ It's pretty true of most goal scorers.

I'll search out the Detroit interview.

That wasn't it. It was the Detroit game.

He's got an attitude, and while it may not be endearing it does seem as if he no longer feels reined in, on and off the ice, and it's hard to argue with the results (so far).  I wouldn't want to exaggerate this, but Lou's departure has made a difference.

He said in one of those fashion interviews that he really admired Russell Westbrook, both in terms of dress sense and in terms of attitude, so I think we can expect a fair bit of self-confidence and individuality from Matthews going forward. I think it's endearing anyway.

And I wonder re: Lamoriello if it's maybe the other way around. While I wouldn't attribute it directly I wonder if realizing that some guys on the team weren't really a good fit for Lamoriello's outdated rules maybe helped grease the skids.

I'm curious what bothered you about this interview. I just re-watched it with gamecentre and it was a pretty standard between period chat.

You could be right.  If the choice is between Matthews and X, no matter who X is (outside of the owner), X will be gone.  But wasn't Lou at the end of his contract anyway?

BTW I am not trying to totally diss Lou here.  He did quite a few good things while here, not the least of which was helping groom Dubas.

Sure, like I said I don't think that's the only reason they moved on, maybe it was always the intention to go with Dubas after three years, but this may have made the decision easier.

In which case maybe they tolerated Grampa Lou's hatred of hippie sideburns because they knew it was temporary.

Ordinarily I'd agree Frycer14, but I think that's just Auston's style now. Answering certain repetitive question very truthfully and curtly. Keep in mind pro-sport is incredibly and corporate and sterile now, he and his fellow young stars want to have fun and produce. I think if I walked a week in his shoes I'd be be more inclined to judge his behavior.
