Auston Matthews

Okay, but what reason is there for him to sign a deal today (the suggestion Zee made that I was replying to)? I don't see any down side to him waiting and there's a chance his play could nudge his ask higher.

If they're willing to give him what he wants, why wouldn't he sign? The issue would be off his mind and he could focus on his play and, again, the premise here is that the hypothetical higher ask would already be in play.
Bingo. Leafs aren't going to try to nickel and dime him. Sure they'll want something reasonable but not like his value will go up if he waits out the year, Leafs will pay him.  The whole "get it out of the way, one less distraction" will be a factor, and no reporters will constantly ask him about his contract the rest of the way. Who knows, they may even decide to hand him the captiancy along with the contract announced (just so Bettman knows who to hand the Cup to this year) :-)

His 4 point night last night against Florida has put Matthews up to 165 points in 165 NHL regular season games. 93 goals already.

For completely meaningless comparison purposes that takes him 1 point ahead of Patrik Laine who has 164 points in 190 regular season games (103 goals).

Laine is as one dimensional a player as they come.

Agreed. But if you?re going to pick a dimension , goal scoring is pretty high on the list .

It's early, and I've been working nights, but I'm actually shocked that Matthews' goal scoring rate is higher than Laine's.
I don't know why everyone's shocked. They've been basically equal goal scorers since they came into the league. It just boggles my mind how much love Laine gets for his shot and Matthews quietly outscores him and few actually care or seem shocked about it. But you know, Laine is the heir apparent to Ovechkins throne so there's no debate....

Laine's goals are pure power and easy for anyone to appreciate. Matthews scores more garbage goals (good on him) and his highlight goals all turn on his insane release and/or camouflage placement -- beautiful (see under BUF OT) but more subtle.  And yes, NHL media are stuck on prewrapped, simplistic superstar narratives.

Matthews is 4th in total goals since entering the league 3 years ago and has played 25+ less games then the 3 above him. He is the leader in goals per game. When it comes to even strength goals, it isn't even close. He's miles ahead in that department. Matthews is also tied for 2nd this year in ppg game with Mackinnon. He's the best player we've seen here since Mats and could possibly be better but before going there, Sundin would absolutely dominate in this NHL without the clutching and grabbing.

Perhaps shocked wasn't the right word. You basically state my sentiment in the rest of your post. Everyone drools over Laine's goal scoring prowess.

He's not close to Ovechkin. His shot is great sure, but AO scored far more goals at the same age. Can Laine have the same longevity as AO? That's a huge ask

In Oveckin's draft+2 and draft+3 years he scored 98 goals.

In Laine's draft+2 year he scored 44 goals and in his draft+3 year he's on pace for 54 goals or 98 total.

Also, in those two years, Ovechkin got nearly 1000 minutes of PP time while Laine got around 446.

Kypreos just went on record saying Matthews will sign his extension before the trade deadline. Hopefully he's not just talking out of his ass.

This is how the Leafs should announce the captain.  No presser, no heads up, he just shows up one day at the rink and the C is on the jersey.

Nah I want it mid-game, Might Ducks style.

Is Tavares wearing a C as well, if not I don't understand why Auston would be wearing it alone. Who is setting these protocols?

Matthews won the fan vote for his division so that's why he's wearing the C.

Are we allowed to do a fan vote for who should be Leafs Captain?
