Bingo. Leafs aren't going to try to nickel and dime him. Sure they'll want something reasonable but not like his value will go up if he waits out the year, Leafs will pay him. The whole "get it out of the way, one less distraction" will be a factor, and no reporters will constantly ask him about his contract the rest of the way. If they're willing to give him what he wants, why wouldn't he sign? The issue would be off his mind and he could focus on his play and, again, the premise here is that the hypothetical higher ask would already be in play.
