Auston Matthews

Yeah but what if he dominated every game, threw checks like a madman and was the best defensive forward like Connor McDavid?

I hate how he avoids contact and scores goals. Why can't he be more like Tie? We'd be a better team in the standings... AMIRITE.

He's able to drop trou in a parking lot but isn't able to drop the gloves on the ice. Disrespectful.

For those of us who think there?s something wrong with Auston Matthews, there really isn?t:

That's not exactly the conclusion of the article (nor my interpretation of the stats and what I've observed during games).

AM is taking a lot more less dangerous shots from crazy places...especially along the side boards and near the blue lines. That's a part of the problem. The question is, is this because AM is not pushing to get to the higher danger areas, or something with the way the offense is designed? It hasn't changed much with the coaching transition.

Some quotes from the article:

"And he really is too often not a factor at all in games off the power play.
" Can anyone who watches the games dispute this? He's often largely invisible for long stretches.

"If you are the sort of person whose job it is to make up the story about why the eye-test and the numbers come out this way, you could say that sometimes Matthews just takes the night off. I?m not that sort of person, but I?ll tell you, I don?t think it?s an indefensible position. " Doesn't seem indefensible to me either.

"When every point counts, you don?t want to see one of the NHL?s elite shooters not shooting or shooting from way outside his area of maximum effect. So whoever has to step up and do whatever they need to do to fix that, they need to move on that now. Because I?m tired of agreeing with Overdrive. " Yep, definitely some tweaking needed.

Not elite.

I think you're forgetting how Teemu Selanne and Wayne Gretzky were top flight defensive players who demolished players with bonecrushing hits.

Right you are.  That one isolated stat is impressive, though.

And I refer you to the comments of the panel ? all of them ? in the second intermission.

Is that the panel's observation of how his good defensive play led to his goal?
It was a very good play defensively. You can see a much better effort on the D side of things from him. Nice to see.

The defensive effort has been very obvious recently. Execution isn't always there, but at least he's trying. I'd say the whole team seems to be improving in the dzone, at least coverage wise. There is some extended dzone time and cycling against the Leafs but they are doing a pretty good job keeping things outside.

All of them have to tighten up on the careless giveaways into the slot, though. Seem to be a few of those every game.

For those with a The Athletic subscription, there?s a really good, candid interview with Matthews today. Gives a little more of his character away and might sway a few opinions on his apparent ?compete level? (probably not though)

I find the Leafs aren't chasing like they used to in their zone. I've seen a few times when guys, who are going to chase, stop themselves and hold their position.
