Auston Matthews

As disappointing as the end to the season was, we really shouldn't overlook just how good a player Matthews is turning into.

Just a bonkers season for him. Such a shame the wrist injury prevented him from chasing the 50 goal mark. I really think he gets there if he was healthy.

It really can't be said enough.  This frachise doesn't just have a 54 year Cup drought, they really haven't been very good at having the best players in the league either.

Mats Sundin - The Lays Potato Chip leadership award 2007-2008
Jason Blake - The you had cancer and played through it award 2007-2008
Alex Mogilny - The you didn't take enough penalties award 2002-2003
Curtis Joseph - The you are a nice guy when not playing hockey award 1999-2000

Matthews winning the Calder in his rookie season and then you have to go back to 1992-1993 for Burns to win coach of the year and Gilmour winning the Selke.  Then we go all the way back to the 60s.

We legitimately have a player who is being considered one of the three best players in the league....and he did it during a season where his wrist was bothering him.

Without the wrist injury, I think he gets there pretty easily. There's a good chance he ends up at or better than a goal/game - he was there pre-injury (18 in 18) and in the stretch post injury before the final few games of the season (19 in 19). Outside of the stretch of injured games, he only went consecutive games without scoring twice and never went consecutive games without a point. That's insane consistency.

Too, consider that the coaches decided to make sure he never scored on the PP, just to make sure that McDavid's confidence wasn't entirely crushed.

It's insane to think how much the crappy PP hurt his goal/point totals. He had a 9 goal lead on McDavid who finished 2nd in 5-on-5 goals, but he was in a 6-way tie for 5th in powerplay goals.

In 5-on-5 points he finished 3rd, 12 behind McDavid and 1 behind Marner. On the powerplay 66 players had more points than him, including Ottawa's Drake Batherson and Josh Norris.

If Nylander isn't on the opposite half wall to Matthews next season, I will send a strongly worded letter to Dubas and the coaching staff. They left multiple games, and arguably a couple of playoff series on the table by trying to repeatedly make Marner-Matthews happen (it worked for a month and a half).

Yeah this started as looking for Nylander passes to Matthews on the PP and devolved into just Nylander goals lol. The point is having more than one legitimate shooting threat on the PP opens up more room for everyone.

Somebody needs to tattoo this sentence on Keefe's forehead.  Kind of an update on The Scarlet Letter.

He couldn't have gotten it done earlier in the summer?
Nevermind.  Just read the actual article, and that.

He's had shoulder problems, now wrist problems.  I hope his career doesn't get curtailed or even derailed by successive injuries.

That?ll be Arizona?s problem.

why did he wait, I can't find anything on this.  Seems if he had the surgery after the loss to Montreal he would be fine by now.

The wrist started acting up as he increased his workload again in preparation for the start of this season.  It wasn't a problem until it became a problem.

Not including the actual 30th goal that he stole from Nylander
