Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs

How is changing their entire defensive system the status quo?

Don't they play the same system as the Marlies? I thought I read the systems are exactly the same to keep it easy for guys coming up?

Redleaf, if it is true perhaps the young guys buy into the system with gusto as it is their only way to the "Bigs",  NHL hockey has become so protectionist on what you can and cannot do with players and their contracts it makes the mind boggle, if you or I fall down on the job we are either fired summarily or given a notice. These guys can't be touched.
Or perhaps they were a very young squad overall and this was the reason for the collapse. Hard to figure

I freely admit I don't follow the AHL at all, but just a quick look at the Marlies season, I see that McIntyre faced an average of 30 shots against per game over 48 games, so that alone seems like a better stat than what the Leafs were doing.  Marlies aren't wildly outshot every game so they must be doing something right.

Maybe the Swarm works best at AHL speed.

Spott said when the collapse was happening that he would not tolerate his team taking 35-40 shots a night, he prefered to try and limit his teams to 25.

I'm hoping that a few veterans are brought in to sort this team out a bit, kinda like Tampa did a few years back.

Firing half the organization is a bad idea. Shanny knows what stability can do for a team.

I'll bet thats all we see right now and I think it wll make a difference.

Shanahan rejoins rush as Maple Leafs face off: Arthur

As a boy Shanahan?s parents would let him figure things out for himself, as parents do with their youngest children. ?I wasn?t over-coached,? is the way he puts it. ?When I fell, no one picked me up. I picked myself up.?

...

?I?m interested in people,? Shanahan says, in a dark blue suit with a white shirt. ?I like to have dinner with interesting people. I?m curious about people. There were teammates who didn?t want to go to dinner with me because the dinners were three hours. I don?t have dinner; I dine. I never understood NHL players that had room service.

?To me, I?ve always recognized when I?m in a good place, and it?s probably something that helped me as a player, and helped dictate the style that I played. I didn?t want to leave any stones unturned. I take sides, I have opinions. It?s not a safe way to live.?

A good article. I always thought that he was a class act. Although as the NHL discipline guy I thought he sucks.

Damn, I want to dine with Brendan Shanahan.

thanks Potvin for posting that, excellent piece and very touching in an odd way. I think we are lucky he is the new man in charge

So on primetime yesterday they seemed to be making a big deal that neither Nonis nor Shanahan live in Toronto. Nonis lives in New Hampshire and Shanahan in Manhattan.

Should we care about this? Is this odd?

This does seem a little weird to me - but maybe this is normal now? I'm not sure what to make of this.

I think they're probably making too much of it. With all the technology available these days, you can effectively do 90% of the their jobs without living in the city full-time. It's not like they're not at a lot of the games or anything like that, either. They spend plenty time in the city and with the team.

I'm sure they have apartments here and spend a large amount of time here, so I can't really see why it'd be much of an issue.

This was written at the time Nonis took over from Burke:

Nonis will be taking up full-time residence in Toronto, something he has never done before.  His wife and teenage son live in New Hampshire.  They won?t be moving here.

So it was yet another half informed, non-researched topic of discussion on the radio.

Well done.

Not to mention that where they live makes not one whit of difference in today's world.

That's not totally true. Face-to-face meetings, meals, handshakes etc., still play a significant role in contract negotiations, particularly in an industry like this.

Yeah, but it's not exactly difficult to fly in for those, and they also don't have to be done at the ACC all the time. Meetings at the players' homes aren't uncommon in the sports industry, either. Really, as long as they live on the same continent as the team they work for, they're fine.
