Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs

Am I the only one, after listening to some of his decisions on disciplinary actions over the last few seasons, who thinks Shanahan is an idiot?

The laces came undo and the team tripped. New laces and the shoes will be fine.

That's why I stay away from laces. Slip-ons my friend. Slip-ons. That way when it comes time to change, I just throw the show the out.

Lets hope this is a masquerade, remember that Burke tossed Wilson a new contract before he was axed. It is not unreasonable for the Leafs to extend for this period, making a statment to the players, that their asses better be moving real quick next season whilst trying to make the Babcock arrangement. If Randy falters, as he will, then he is jettisoned with a few bucks (same as Ronnie) as MLSE can well afford to do this. Hope I am making sense but there didnt seem to be a whole lot of replaceable coaches out there that I would have cared to hand the reigns over to at this point, but Babcock would be the man I would choose to be behind the bench.

Idiot is a bit of strong word, but yes, I think his decisions were alarmingly inconsistent and ineffective in that role.

I think this market deserves someone with proven success. But Lieweke is a showman, more than anything else.

I appreciated the videos he did.  I didn't agree with the decision most times, but if that was his idea to create the justification videos, I think it was a good step for the league.  I don't know if I want to hold Shana-ban personally accountable for the inconsistencies in the disciplinary office though.  It seems like every sport has that issue that outside of cut and dry CBA mandated suspension policies there are arbitrary rules that make for strange decisions.

That by no means makes what Shanahan did a stand-up job, but I don't think it's possible to do a great job in that office.

These Phaneuf trade rumours solidify for me how that the Shanahan hire was a good one.

There's no way that Nonis on his own would attempt to trade Phaneuf after giving him that 7x7 contract....hooray for Shanny.

Depressingly, you are right about both men.

Considering Shanahan's predecessor was frequently ripped for his disciplinary decisions, I'm going to guess it's a function of the job and that there is a ton of stuff that goes on behind the scenes that we are not privy to.  Shanahan deserves credit for trying to push it into a more transparent model.  At the end of the day, I think you could put Walter Gretzky in that role and he gets ripped.  It's a no-win job, IMO.

I think that's probably true but that's why I think it was so weird to see people cite Shanahan's role there as being a really solid credential for his job with the Leafs. It's a weird, functionary position.
