Coronavirus

Also, are these doctors really this stupid?

"little to no COVID-19 transmission occurring in the school setting.?

By all means make your case, but don't use absolute nonsense we knew to be untrue way back in the early days of the pandemic. Kids aren't magically able to spread every pathogen possible (and give to their parents or grandparents) but not covid.

I'd like to see which doctors and what fields they're in that signed off on this.
Agree.

None of these stupid rules and decisions from all sides make any sense anymore.

There?s a great one in Ireland where cinemas have to close at 8pm.
Restaurants/Bars here must close by 11pm...no booze after 10 but you can order take out. No food is to be served at any sporting event either. I can't imagine going to a game and not eating some crappy popcorn or a $20 beer!

I kinda get the no alcohol thing, alcohol lowers inhibitions and distancing etc so early closure means less drinking theoretically.

I cannot for the life of me work out what the difference in watching a movie at 6pm in the cinema and the same movie in the same screen at 8.30pm might be though.

Maybe the new strain of the virus only comes out after dark.

I think the common thread there is that with any sort of restrictions what you're doing is reducing the total number of people who are taking part. So I don't know exactly what percentage of their tickets the average movie theatre sells for post 8:30 shows is but you have to figure it's pretty significant, something like 30% or so on weeknights, at least.

So while the curfew doesn't immediately make sense, you are reducing cinema going by 30% or so which, you would like to think, means 30% less transmission in cinemas.

After reading up on the science of the virus (i.e. airborne, targets respiratory cells), I generally just follow these guidelines
- don?t share air with unverified sources*
- get vaccinated (to the eligible max)
- wear an N95 respirator-level mask (or whatever mask you have) in indoors or close quarters outdoors

Ontario?s guidelines, in general, fall short in my opinion. Taking partial measures or leaving openings for infection vectors for the sake of large corporate profits is why Ontario is still spinning its wheels and really sucks because most people are trying their best to follow guidelines and being rewarded with inevitable lockdowns.

* I cancelled our usual dinner plans with my parents once omicron reared up because while I trust my parents and their measures, I don?t know my sister-in-law?s family?s practice. With an unvaccinatable child to keep in mind, I am not going to try to thread that needle.

I happy to know that the handful of names on that list that I know personally are people I stopped communicating with shortly after the start of the pandemic.

I do somewhat understand a piece of their rationale that the home schooling stuff is placing a massive financial burden on families that are already struggling (taking time off to babysit your kids) but it's just bad science.  It's embarrassing that their argument is that the schools aren't a potential source for spread.  Argue the economics/social hardship angle if you want, but don't make up bullshit arguments.

I?m down with more testing and helping people who need to travel get screened properly and quickly, but to keep public resources pseudo-crippled to endorse privatized (i.e. for profit) endeavours for public health requirements is pretty gross.

I could really use some advice/guidance/comfort on a situation, as I'm sure many of which are also experiencing the same thing -- what do you do about or say to unvaccinated family members who are defiant and set in their ways?

This being last year this time, I understood their stance.  I thought along their same lines, but at least within I was somewhat open-minded to it.  But I'm not staunch as them about it and am 100% pro vaccine at this point.  There's enough data out there to show that they do a heckuva lot more good than bad.

Thing is, they think I/we (my immediate, vaccinated family) are the assholes because we didn't want to have and partake in the usual sit down dinners inside for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  They feel as if we shun them.  And of course, the whole "if you're vaccinated why are you worried" mantra is thrown around.  I've explained this to my aunt numerous times now -- I don't care for myself (I really don't, my wife is the anal one about it holding me back)...it's for you.  She's in her 60s, obese, diabetic, and has whatever other health issues.  She's the super sensitive type, so she takes it to heart thinking it's breaking up the family (another theory that side has about the whole pandemic -- it's a way to cause division amongst family and friends).  I just keep telling her I don't want these past gatherings to be our last when we all have so many more years ahead.

The fact that her two daughters allow for it royally pisses me off.  It's tough talking about it with them because they are so dead set in their ways.

So now there is tension amongst my closest family, it stresses me out because I too am the sensitive, take-things-to-heart type who hates them feeling like this towards me and we have missed out on our usual stuff, and it'll be a while now before either side trusts each other again.

I think they are completely nuts and stubborn and selfish, but I can't flat out say that.  In return, they say they feel like lepers.  What a strain.

Sorry, Peter; that sucks. The only comfort I can offer is that everyone is going through something like that. I have a similar situation with a close (non-immediate) family we always hung out with pre-pandemic, who were already a bit too steeped in the conservative identity (Shapiro, Rogan, Peterson, \et al) and decided they didn't want to vaccinate.

I don't know what to do either; like all politicized/religicized things tend to be (even when they shouldn't be), it is wrapped up in identity and entwined with an individual's value system. There is no changing of minds here; a change of heart is required -- i.e. the solution is not in logic but in addressing the emotional need that holding onto an anti-vaccination stance fulfills. Approaching it with science and facts usually backfires and just encourages them to set their defenses higher (and turn the cognitive dissonance louder).

From what I've gleaned so far, for someone to move off that belief, it must be replaced by something else that fulfills that need in a positive way. It might be gradual (erosion), or it might be a significantly jarring event (deathbed conversions to vaccinations, unfortunately). Approaching it with compassion and humility, from a position of walking alongside them in this journey of discovery helps.

So glad we got our boosters when they first let 50+ book. I booked last Monday and got the shot Tuesday, crazy seeing the lineups on the news now of people just waiting.
Any side effects? I had a sore arm, that was it. Partner was knocked out for a whole day.
Both had 2x AZ and 1xPfizer booster.
My wife and I had the Moderna booster yesterday.. For the first time I felt the needle go in and have to say I am having some real ache in my shoulder area this AM.  Woke up sleeping on that side and had to switch immediately.  My wife gets the sore arm everytime. Otherwise feel great.

I got my Moderna booster yesterday too. Holy man did it knock me on my ass. Slept maybe 2 hours last night. Had fever, chills, body aches, headache, massive fatigue (though that could be just from the lack of sleep). Loaded up on advil, forced myself to shower, and I'm feeling better already. Had my shot at 11:30 am yesterday, I'm feeling better now at 2:30 pm.

I had no reaction at all from the 1st two shots, other than a sore shoulder. I got a 1/2 dose since I'm younger than 70.

1.  AZ - knocked me on my ass for 24hrs.
2.  Moderna - nothing.
3.  Pfizer - knocked me on my ass for 24hrs.

Everyone seems to have a different reaction.

Looking at Ontario?s new Covid rulings, it appears the government wants us all to get Covid and doesn?t want anyone to know where you got it from.

There will be many lasting takeaways I have from the pandemic but none will be stronger than discovering how a government like Ford's will weigh the value of human life vs. temporary harm to the economy..

Is it good economics to let 3 generations of health care workers, educators, and service industry folk burn out; saddle the province?s taxpayers with a mountain of long-term healthcare requirements? just to appease anti-maskers/vaxxers and corporate fat cats?
