Dave Bolland

I think Clarkson should take the next 5 or so years to heal that elbow, just to be sure. He's garbage and the team's better without him. Unless he takes Colton Orr's role - I can live with that.

This.  Clarkson has been some kind of bad.  Not a good choice to sign him.

Saw this on Twitter the other day:

@fearthefin  Jan 30

Benoit Pouliot now has three times as many goals and over twice as many points as David Clarkson at 1/4th the cap hit and 1/7th the term.

Pouliot was a guy that at least one of those Leafs blogs (either PPP or TheLeafsNation, or maybe both) mentioned in the summer would be a good guy to target instead of Clarkson.

Clarkson was coming on in the last 10 games showing us why we signed him. He is a good player. And a family man not a deviant.

He had 1 assist in his last 10 games, I sure as hell hope he's better than that.

Sure, but he also had like 30 intangibles in that span.

His intangibles are so intangible they aren't measurable by stats.

November - 13GP 2G 2A -2 38 hits 8 blocked shots  (2 PP points)
December - 12GP 1G 2A +1 39 hits 11 blocked shots
January -    7GP 0G 0A  -3  12 hits 4 blocked shots

His hit totals put him near the top of the team.  He also has the 6th most giveaways for a forward on the team despite playing 20 fewer games than most of the team.

His intangibles seem to be that the team was creating a cycle without actually providing any offense.  I guess that's a positive but cycle with no end result is only so useful when you are being paid 5+ million to provide physicality AND offense.

There is a thread for Clarkson discussion, let's try and keep this thread about David Bolland.

He's been so bad it takes two threads to contain the stink.

Looks like someone in the media is trying to get a few hits by suggesting that Bolland is on the block:

Article here

I suppose this was inevitable. Pure speculation on the part of Koshan.

Dreger said it too, but again he was just talking out loud pretty much.

Bolland also said he'll have to keep skating with a modified skate likely for the rest of his career to account for scarring on his ankle.

None of those tweets should make anybody happy.

The first two certainly make the third a little disconcerting. I wouldn't get into contract talks until I'd seen him in game action for at least a couple weeks.

Ok, so looking like he definitely won't play tomorrow in Tampa, or Saturday vs Vancouver, but I wonder if he might play a game or two with the Marlies after the 19th to test it before the NHL resumes again. He gets a mandated 10 days, just like his teammates, where he can't practice or play due to spending more than 75% of the season so far on the NHL roster.

It's not just this injury, but also his history over the last 5 years that makes me wary of signing him to a long-term deal.

I read that he's going down to London to skate with the Knights during the break.

During the 10 day mandated break yes, but on the 19th he has to report back to the Leafs. NHL doesn't resume until almost a week later I do believe.

I was completely blown away by Bolland?s play in October, but I would be very hesitant to sign him unless I see few games after his injury, especially if he is looking for long term deal.

Well, talking numbers with his camp at this point is very important.  If his camps terms are too much for the Leafs, then you know he's either a rental for us down the stretch or for another team.  However, if his demands are reasonable, we have until July 5th before he hits UFA.  We don't need to sign him before the trade deadline.  So we can move forward, evaluate his play, and then determine if he's still capable of what he was before, and if so, sign him to a reasonable contract.

Excellent article about Bolland and the Leafs.  Seems to say if we sign Bolland its goodbye to Kuliman and as said before (no trade Kuliman).  http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2014/02/07/dave-bolland-the-leafs-rebuild-succession-plans/
