David Clarkson - Signs with Maple Leafs

Like I said in the other thread, his goal totals are a secondary thing for me. - I'm far more interested in Wins and I think Clarkson is a big help to that end.

You know what really helps win games more than anything other than goaltending? Goals.

Orr is going to stare down the opposition into victories

I don't love the term or the price but....you know if you'd ask me what my ideal addition to the Leafs would be outside of a top center I'd have said a winger who adds genuine physicality and can score some gritty goals. If Clarkson can do that I can live with it, I suppose.

You mean outside a top center or a top defenseman?  :-)

His intangibles are off the charts:

Yes, I look forward to Clarkson opening a lot of space for his team-mates to score bunches of them.

I'm on board with saying this is about 1-1.5M too much and a couple years too long. Like the skillset he brings, but...just doesn't seem like the best contract, does it?

Ok, but third on the list would be a physical winger. Well, except maybe a penalty killing top 4 defenseman. Or maybe a penalty killing #3 center.

The point is I liked Gary Roberts.

Man, I hope you're right about that, but, I don't see it happening. Nevertheless, at the price he's being paid, he has to contribute a lot more than just opening up space to be worth the money - and by that, I mean actually putting a good number of pucks in the net himself and setting up a good number of goals from others.

I'm of the same mindset, my only fear is that now that Clarkson has the big bucks, he'll be less concerned with crushing dudes into the boards and more worried about trying to justify his contract by putting up points.

It's a fair point. Kovalchuk comes to New Jersey and blammo! He becomes a pretty good goalscorer.

Clarkson apparently has some pretty severe flaws. Not liking this signing, overpaid by $2 million, and the length is absolutely atrocious.

That's one of the things, apparently, that he does not do.

A few Devils supporting friends of mine are pretty gutted he's left, guys who know their stuff at a decent level. So from that pragmatic point of view I look forward to seeing how he pans out.

I don't know much about him, but I do like the tough nosed guys so let's hope he fills that role and contributes.

Agreed, especially since as mentioned he doesn't really do much on the defensive end in terms of blocking shots or killing penalties.

Also another thing when it comes to potential comparisons to a Lucic type player is that he has a much smaller frame. He's only about 6'1 and around 200 lbs; he plays a lot bigger than he actually is. Obviously he's built up a reputation as a bruiser now, but on its own he doesn't have that physically imposing frame that a Lucic type does.

I think he'll be around 20-25G and 20-25A with the physical edge he brings.

You can't put a price on "too much man".

So what would they be or are we just going with "apparently"?

People who have seen him play a lot (me, for one) are talking about what a good pickup this is even if its an expensive one.  This guy brings far far more to the table than just the goals he has produced in the last 2 years.

As of now the only forwards with some real hockey skill are Kessel, Lupul and Kadri, and to certain extent Kuli, the rest are hard nosed players, pure scrappers and Kessel?s buddy Bozie

This feels like a mistake.  I really hope I'll have eaten those words by this time next year, but holy smokes, he'd better be a hell of a lot better than Grabbo.

JVR?

who is this guy? Never heard of him before :-\  worth losing Grabo over? Possibly Bozak?

I'm not impressed with the length. Way too long and I'm still not sure it was worth losing Grabbo.

This guy is a real gamer...going to make players on the team better....only issue with me is he could spend the last couple of years on his contract on the injury list.
